The Thornton School of Music welcomes applications for the position ofSenior Business Officer I (SBO). We seek an experienced financial professional with strong organizational, communication, and strategic analysis skills to direct the school’s business operations and participate in planning for the school’s strong and vibrant future. The SBO will be a model for ethical stewardship of financial assets who actively contributes to a culture of integrity, open communication, diversity and inclusion, and caring for the well-being of the community.
The Senior Business Officer reports to the Associate Dean for Administration and Finance, and works in close partnership with the Dean, Dean’s Cabinet, Department Chairs, Human Resources and Faculty Affairs staff. The SBO supervises business office and payroll staff.
The Senior Business Officer will:
Direct the comprehensive business operations including procurement, payroll, stewardship of gift and endowment resources, financial systems, accounting, and reporting. Model the highest level of ethical behavior in financial management; ensure strong internal controls and compliance with legal requirements and University policies. Supervise financial and payroll staff.
Develop and monitor departmental and school-wide budgets across all categories of activity, including tuition revenue; gifts and endowments; compensation; supplies, equipment and professional services; student aid; facilities, infrastructure and capital improvements; and special projects. Analyze and report actual performance to budget to determine variances, and take corrective action as needed. Ensure effective utilization of financial and other assets, and efficiency of operations.
Administer information systems and procedures to support financial operations. Lead ongoing training for staff and faculty on systems, policies and procedures, and compliance requirements. Oversee sound financial and payroll recordkeeping. Ensure thorough review of contracts and agreements.
Partner with leadership to develop the school’s annual budget. Provide analysis and reports to inform planning. Prepare the annual budget forecast for submission and administer the process of translating budget detail to the general ledger and payroll.
Partner with leadership, faculty affairs staff and department chairs on instructional budget, faculty compensation and faculty contracts. Advise on laws and policies governing compensation, ensuring compliance of contracts and accuracy of pay disbursements.
Partner with human resources and administrative leadership on staff planning, deployment, organizational structure and compensation.
Support strategic planning and new program development, as requested. Research and compile data required to develop assumptions, projections and strategies. Monitor action plans and implement changes as needed.
Administer research funds, ensuring compliance and sound reporting. Provide training as needed to faculty and staff on research fund administration and guidelines.
Assist in management of special projects, as assigned by school leadership.
Participate as core member of the Thornton School’s emergency response and business continuity teams.
The ideal candidate will have:
Outstanding skill in fiscal management, analysis, information systems and communication.
A record of progressively responsible financial experience, strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices and their application in the university’s financial operations.
Demonstrated analytical capability in financial analysis, presentation, planning and reporting.
Experience with Workday, SIS, Anaplan, and other University systems, and familiarity with USC’s fiscal policies and procedures highly desirable.
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Sharepoint, Trello and other information management tools.
Experience leading, training and supervising staff.
Ability to exercise discretion, maintain confidentiality, and uphold the highest level of ethical behavior and integrity.

Job Qualifications:
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree. Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum experience.
Minimum Experience: 5 years’ experience in financial management, with record of advancement in responsibilities.
Preferred Education: Master’s Degree.
Preferred Experience: 7 years’ experience working in positions of financial leadership.
Salary Hiring Range:
The annual base salary range for this position is$131,960 to $150,912.
