The University of Virginia’s Office of the Vice President for Research seeks a Research Computing Associate/Computational Scientist to join their team. The incumbent acts as a technical resource for University faculty and researchers, translating between scientific research needs and computing solutions for the UVa Research Computing (https://rc.virginia.edu) team.
The incumbent will provide technical support for RC’s computing and storage services, create internal and user facing technical documentation, and assist senior staff with expanding educational and consulting offerings in their field of expertise, such as bioinformatics, data science, machine/deep learning, and database usage.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for providing high-quality services and enjoy supporting and educating academic researchers, have some experience with academic computing, and be able to apply those skills to UVA’s HPC environment. We seek an energetic self-starter and quick learner who enjoys technical problem solving and working on multiple projects simultaneously, has strong communication skills, and is a team player. The ideal candidate will have research experience in at least one of these areas: bioinformatics, data science, machine learning/deep learning.
We offer flexible telecommuting options, a friendly and diverse work environment in a small group (less than 25 staff), a hands-off management style, and a supportive workplace. Funding is available for a limited amount of travel for professional development.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in life science, data science, engineering, or a related area.
At least three years of experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Education and Experience:
An advanced degree in life science, data science, engineering, or a related area is preferred.
At least 2 years of experience with R, Python, or Matlab programming for data analysis and/or machine learning/deep learning.
Experience with Linux, including basic shell scripting.
Familiarity with using database management systems (e.g. SQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB).
Experience with high-performance computing.
Teaching or user training experience in any computational research domain is a plus.
Familiarity with computational bioinformatics workflows or deep learning frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow/Keras or PyTorch) is a bonus.
Familiarity with software container technology is a plus.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
