The Department of Genome Sciences is part of the University of Washington School of Medicine and is comprised of 31 labs addressing leading edge questions in biology and medicine by developing and applying genetic, genomic and computational approaches taking advantage of genomic information now available for a host of species. GS is making major contributions in the application of genome science to understand the fundamentals of biology and to improve human health and wellbeing. Genome Sciences is a collaborative department supported by very different academic disciplines. We work with a multitude of Program Investigators (PIs) in departments both on the UW campus as well as worldwide. The department has gone through significant expansion since its beginning in 2001 with annual grant awards of $63M in FY23.

The Northwest Genomics Center (NWGC) at the University of Washington is one of the leading genome centers in the United States. The NWGC, housed in the Department of Genome Sciences, is the largest self-sustaining genome center in the Pacific Northwest and one of the most successful genome centers in the country. It has partnered to deliver exome and/or whole genome sequence (WGS) data for many highly successful large-scale human genetic projects for both rare conditions and common diseases. These projects include the Centers for Mendelian Genomics (CMG), the NHLBI Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine Program (TOPMed) and, most recently, the All of Us Research Program.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Department of Genome Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for a Junior Software Developer to support the Northwest Genomics Center (NWGC). This individual will participate in the design, development and testing of various software systems including the NWGCs in house Library Information Management System (LIMS), genomics pipelines for processing and analysis of sequencing information, and new software tools for analysis of genomics data.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Software development. The developer will contribute to a variety of software projects including LIMS, Genomics pipelines and Genomics tools in support of the Northwest Genomics Center and the research conducted in the lab. This will include but not be limited to development of GUIs, APIs, webpages, dashboards, and other tools. (70%)
• Troubleshooting and analysis. The developer will be responsible for quick bug fixes and software administration to help keep processes moving. (10%)
• Requirements gathering. Interact with management and technical staff to gather requirements for the specific needs of the software to be designed in terms of overall function, fit with the process in the lab, and the need for reporting and analysis by managers. (10%)
• Software documentation. Responsible for writing specifications and code documentation to ensure that others understand what each specific piece of code is doing, and to ensure continuity and maintainability (5%)
• Software testing. Responsible for testing new software modules prior to release to check for bugs or potentially undesirable side-effects of code interaction (5%) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, biology, related field, or equivalent experience
• Two years total software development experience across a range of languages and libraries in a diverse computing environment
• Proficiency in Java, C#, or another strongly typed Object Oriented Language and at least one scripting language
• Demonstrated ability to learn new languages and programming paradigms
• Demonstrated ability to work in a highly agile software development environment with minimal supervision
• Experience with database technologies such as SQL
• Excellent written and communication skills
• Ability to interact with staff, faculty, and students at all levels DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Working knowledge of biology, genetics, genomics, or DNA sequencing
• Experience with data persistence frameworks like Hibernate.
• Recent experience with any of the following technologies:
• Java
• JavaScript
• Vue.js
• SQL
• Singularity or Docker
• Cloud infrastructure (e.g. Google Cloud, AWS)
• Experience with open-source software development
• Experience working in diverse computing environments (LINUX, UNIX, Windows)
• Experience with software testing methodologies including JUnit5
• Experience with software engineering best practices including unit testing, use of project management software and source code repositories, and documentation
• Software process experience from requirements gathering through production release
• Full-stack programming experience
• Familiarity with versioning tools (e.g. Git)
