Purpose:
Perform under general supervision and according to established guidelines and procedures, routine and complex procedures to obtain data for use in the clinical diagnosis of disorders of the nervous system in at least one of the following modalities of neurodiagnostic: Electroencephalography (EEG), Evoked Potentials (EP), Epilepsy Monitoring and Polysomnography (PSG), or Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS). Perform duties in various diagnostic and research areas as assigned.
Responsibilities:
Operate computer equipment to record nervous system responses that provide quantitative and objective measures of the neuronal/sensory function.
Schedule patients for neurodiagnostic procedures and obtain required medical information; explain procedures, alleviate fears, and elicit cooperation. Prepare patient for tests to include measuring and marking cranial area and fastening electrodes to specified positions on scalp and body.
React in medical emergencies to ensure patient safety; know unit and hospital procedures for working with high acuity patients.Perform the following additional responsibilities:
Collaborate with supervisor and medical personnel to resolve problems and to advise concerning laboratory procedures, techniques and equipment.
Document pertinent medical history from the patient or family members.
Recognize changes in the clinical condition of the patient and correlate those changes with the EEG. Discriminate the changes requiring intervention such as seizures or cardiac arrhythmia.
Clean, adjust and perform routine maintenance and repair on neurodiagnostic equipment to ensure proper functioning. Troubleshoot routine equipment problems.
Perform procedures with appropriate documentation.
Perform advanced EEG recording or specialized procedures as required. Review and edit ambulatory EEG studies prior to physician review. Maintain current digital EEGs on the central workstations for physician review. Archive and verify digital EEGs on permanent storage media.
Experienced and comfortable with routine and long-term EEGs, Pediatric studies. Willing to travel as needed for patient care. Works autonomously.
Identify EEG waveforms/patterns during testing and communicate to medical personnel.
High School diploma or equivalent and 2 years of EEG experience, OR associate degree and 1 year of EEG experience, OR Successful completion of ASET Introduction to EEG course series and 1 year of EEG experience. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
