Together, we can beat cancer.
At Varian, a Siemens Healthineers Company, we bring together the world’s best talent to realize our vision of a world without fear of cancer. Together, we work passionately to develop and deliver easy-to-use, efficient oncology solutions.
We are part of an incredible community of scientists, clinicians, developers, researchers, professionals, and skilled specialists pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, to improve people’s lives around the world. We embrace a culture of inclusivity in which the power and potential of every individual can be unleashed. We spark ideas that lead to positive impact and continued success.
If you want to be part of this important mission, we want to hear from you.
The Global Translational Science (GTS) team at Varian is seeking a highly motivated and accomplished bioinformatics senior scientist to join Varian Medical Affairs to advance our pre-clinical and clinical pipeline through discovery and translational research.
As the central biological science team in Varian, the GTS team is uniquely positioned to conduct research that transforms today’s cancer treatments: inventing the next-generation radiotherapies, identifying novel immunotherapy combinations and advancing precision medicine through artificial intelligence. In addition to innovating internally in our team, we work with teams specialized in biomarkers, physics and engineering, world-renowned academic research groups, biopharma partners and Varian’s clinical research team to translate the discoveries into the clinic.
The Scientist/Senior Scientist, AI and bioinformatics will report to the Director of Research Science and function as the bioinformatics lead, leading cross-functional activities to identify unmet clinical needs, generating original research, and advancing projects from discovery to clinical trials.
Key Responsibilities
Identify and apply the appropriate tools and techniques of bioinformatics to problems in radiobiology, immunology, cancer biology and drug-radiotherapy combination therapies in support of Varian’s scientific research programs.
Lead bioinformatics projects in areas such as analyzing high-throughput drug screens to identify novel therapies; analyzing NGS datasets (bulk and single-cell sequencing) for target discovery and setting up computational models for predicting pharmacogenomic interactions.
Define data requirements for new research projects.
Oversee the infrastructure for data storage and exchange.
Collaborate with other Varian business units and external academic or industry partners.
Present to the Varian leadership team and participate in decision-making.
Present at international conferences and publish in high-impact journals.
Participate in the writing of FDA documents (IDE and IND) and patent applications.
Requirements
PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, (bio)statistics, or a relevant area
3+ years experience working with large data sets using Python/Jupyter or R
3+ years experience driving bioinformatics projects from conception to execution, ability to come up with analysis plan or own project independently, as demonstrated by high-quality publications.
Ability to communicate and collaborate with cancer biologists and immuno-oncologists in the team.
Prior experience in high-throughput screening analysis, NGS analysis, immune-profiling and mining of public database are desirable.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
Deep understanding of machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence as applied to biological datasets is a plus.
To ensure compliance with applicable legal requirements in the U.S., including the federal COVID-19 vaccination mandate, all U.S. employees must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, subject to legally required and approved accommodations.
Fighting cancer calls for big ideas.
We envision a world without fear of cancer. Achieving this vision takes dedication and commitment from all of us, every single day. That’s why we celebrate and value the distinctly beautiful and intersectional identities of each of our employees. We are a mirror of our patient-base, which allows us to innovate. Big ideas come from everywhere, and the best ideas are fostered by our unique individual experiences. At Varian, we encourage you to bring your whole self to work and believe your bold and authentic perspective will help to power more victories over cancer.
