Primary responsibilities for respiratory care delivered to the neonatal, pediatric, and adolescent patients. This includes but is not limited to the neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, the pediatric floor, the emergency dept., and the mobile intensive care unit. Also responsible for routine respiratory procedures on adult patients. Completion of an Associates Degree in Respiratory Care and completion of educational opportunities and orientation in the neonatal and pediatric areas required. Under the general direction of the shift supervisor, responsible for care delivered seven days a week and 24 hours a day.
Responds to patient emergencies and CPR and performs airway management.
Initiates mechanical ventilation and monitors patients receiving mechanical ventilation. Evaluates response and makes recommendations appropriately and makes changes appropriately.
Administers medical gas therapy.
Performs routine and special neonatal procedures such as, but not limited to, respiratory medication delivery, intubation, ABG puncture and analysis, high frequency ventilation, surfactant replacement, assists in high risk delivery, performs in house and Mobile ICU transport.
Performs patient assessments and makes recommendations regarding respiratory care procedures. Forwards assessment results to further department programs.
Documents respiratory care performed and completes all departmental records.
Performs equipment cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization.
Assists the clinical education of students as required.
Maintains supplies in assigned areas.
Performs ventilator se-up and calibration.
Maintains a positive work climate and overall team effort of the department.
Performs related tasks as required or directed
EDUCATION:
Skill and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques of the respiratory care profession, with emphasis on neonatal and pediatric care. Such proficiency normally acquired through completion of an Associates Degree in Respiratory Care and completion of educational opportunities and orientation in the neonatal and pediatric areas.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
Must be registered through the NBRC. Must maintain a current Tennessee state license in Respiratory Care. Must maintain a current BLS certification by the American Heart Association or equivalent. Completion of an NRP course is desired.
EXPERIENCE:
Proficiency in all Basic Skills of Respiratory Care practices and procedures. Experience in the Neonatal and Pediatric floors. Such experience gained during an orientation period at whose end the therapist must demonstrate competency in the Neonatal and Pediatric procedures.
