Westminster House Care Home Looking for Resident Care Aide (casual, on call) at Surrey, BC Full Time

Westminster House currently is hiring casual Resident Care Aides for days, evening and night shifts. There is a strong possibility of permanent positions becoming available in the future. NOTE: When applying, please advise what days and hours you are available for.

SUMMARY OF THE POSITION:

Under the direction of the Resident Care Manager or Nurse-in-Charge, and in cooperation with other health care workers, provides basic care and assistance to the residents in activities of daily living (ADL) that is planned and individualized.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Provides personal care to residents such as assisting the resident with bathing, skin care and grooming, dressing, making and changing beds; assisting with toileting needs and encouraging/assisting with opportunities for recreation, spiritual and social activities.
• Feeds or assists the residents to eat and take adequate fluids as individually indicated by care plans/worksheets and feedback from the Dietitian. This may include the serving and collection of meal trays and the provision of prescribed food supplements and nourishment.
• Transfers and transports residents utilizing established techniques and mechanical aides such as wheelchairs and lifts, as well as following policies and procedures.
• Performs minor procedures such as the application of ointments and creams, administering suppositories and enemas and obtaining specimens such as urine. Reports problems and/or changes to designated nursing staff.
• Weighs and records resident weights, accurately, advises Nurse in charge of discrepancies, monitors and records bowel function daily; documents the applicant of ointments and creams according to established policies and procedures.
• Initiates, updates and communicates information regarding resident’s activities of daily living in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Reports observed changes in resident activity level, behavior, or physical well-being to the appropriate Registered Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
• Assists with the admissions, discharges and transfers of residents by performing tasks such as packing/unpacking the resident’s belongings, giving a tour of the units to the new residents and stripping the bed linens after discharge/transfer.
• Maintains work area in clean and safe condition by methods such as tidying the tub room, linen cart, disposing of dirty linen at end of shift, mopping up spills and keeping all carts/equipment in use to one side of the corridor. Resident bathrooms are to be left clean, there is to be adequate toiletries, and dirty pads are to be disposed of properly
• Responds to incidents or emergencies in accordance with policy, procedure and training.
• Monitors resident safety and reports hazards, near misses, unusual occurrences, accidents, and unsafe or faulty equipment/furniture to the Resident Care Manager/designate.
• Ensures that residents are well groomed and are wearing clean clothing.
• Attends in-service training and workshops as required by Westminster House.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum Grade 10 education, plus graduation from a recognized Resident Care Aide program.
• Must have a valid, current BC Care Aide Registry number.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
• Ability and desire to work together with others in a team
• Ability to physically carry out the duties of the position
• Ability to organize work efficiently, good time management skills
• Ability to operate related equipment

PAY & BENEFITS

• Current hourly rate is $25.84 per hour and will continue as long as the Single Site Order (SSO) is in place. Casuals receive 10.2% in lieu of benefits and regular part-time employees are eligible for extended health benefits, paid vacation and sick.

COVID-19 considerations:
We are following all Provincial Health Office & Fraser Health Licensing guidelines. There is currently a Single Site Order in place. Staff have to do a self-evaluation before each shift and temperatures are checked. PPE equipment is supplied.
