Summary:
Reporting to the Clinical Manager, coordinates, assists and provides support to all members of the healthcare team to deliver compassionate, personal care, comfort, and safety for patients. The Emergency Department Technician works within their scope of practice on assigned tasks under the direct supervision of
Responsibilities:
Shifts focus quickly to support patients and/or co-workers, as needs arise. Adjusts own practices to support broader system needs and requirements. Changes approach xe2x80x9cmidstreamxe2x80x9d when something is not working. Responds in a flexible and cordial manner to different demands from various caregivers. Manages multiple tasks and changes rapidly one task to another, when necessary.
Anticipates and acts on the needs of patients and co-workers. Modifies communication style to effectively address the feelings and concerns of patients and co-workers. Transfers unique patient knowledge from on encounter to another. Listens carefully to others to understand their needs and concerns. Informs patients using pre-printed instructions for routine procedures, simple diagnostic test results and/or treatment.
Anticipates equipment and supply utilization well enough to maintain sufficient inventory PAR levels. Puts away stock orders, restocks supplies, checks, and rotates refrigerated stock items. Assists EMS with supply replacement. Utilizes computer skills to document patient care provided or to meet other department needs.
Directs or escorts patients to patient care areas, waiting areas, other departments, exits and parking lots.
Provides precise technical skills in performing the following tasks: EKGxe2x80x99s, vital signs, phlebotomy, patient weights, applies monitoring equipment, minor non-sterile dressings, finger sticks, urine pregnancy tests, applies cardiac monitor, operates cardiopulmonary compression device, assists with cardioversion and defibrillation and other duties as instructed.
Under direction of the nurse and provider, provides assistance to providers and nurses on the following procedures: large or complicated dressing changes, line placement, endoscopic procedures, Lumbar Puncture, laceration repair/suture removal, gynecologic exams, NG or chest tube insertion, and other duties as instructed.
Assists in positioning/holding patients for invasive procedures such as Lumbar Puncture, and orthopedic procedures.
Reports change to registered nurse or provider for all patients with medical issues and handles/refers non-medical needs.
Tracks laboratory or diagnostic results and forwards normal/abnormal results to be reviewed and followed up by the Anesthesia providers.
Assists with patient care such as ambulating, positioning for comfort, personal care, dressing, undressing, and empties foley catheter bags.
Assists with transportation of patients to diagnostics areas, inpatient units and hospital exits Assists the Registered Nurse with the removal of peripheral IVs.
Performs, IV establishment (peripheral access only) and dressings.
Adjusts own workload to support co-workers in meeting patient needs. Listens for key information to prioritize level of importance of task. Works efficiently during down times to keep work flowing. Manages time by preparing and organizing in advance. Utilizes sound judgement to recognize level of urgency and responds appropriately.
Follows a logical line of questioning to understand who best meets the patientsxe2x80x99 needs. Handles potentially critical situations with speed and sensitivity. Anticipates questions/problems and prepares appropriate response. Collects all medical data to facilitate the providerxe2x80x99s ability to draw conclusions about the patientxe2x80x99s needs.
Sees problems through to conclusion even in stressful, unpleasant patient interactions. Informs provider or other appropriate caregiver immediately of any error. Anticipates problems and informs nurse and provider in advance.
Assists in the resolution of emotionally disruptive situations seeking assistance from co-workers, when necessary. Manages onexe2x80x99s emotions and the potential effects on co-workers and patients. Deals calmly and politely with patients and co-workers under stress. Preserves the reputation of the team in the face of conflict with others. Handles difficult patient situations in a way that takes into consideration longer-term patient relationships.
Assists nursing and security team with safety and belonging search procedures
Negotiates necessary interdepartmental patient information and services to ensure proper patient care.
Continuously learns about topics related to the position (i.e., reads latest information attends classes, observes procedures, and asks questions).Seeks out challenging opportunities to advance personal learning. Provides feedback to fellow staff members for improvement of job-related tasks. Provides suggestions to improve department efficiencies.
Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
High school graduate or its equivalent.Able to read, write and speak English.
Must possess one or more of the following experiences or credentials:
Current licensure in the State of Rhode Island
-Emergency Medical Technician- Cardiac (EMT-C)
-Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
-Advanced Emergency Medical Technician- Cardiac (AEMT-C)
American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
EXPERIENCE:
One year of related experience preferred.
Demonstrated understanding of personal computers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Patient care environment with exposure to communicable diseases.Hazards minimized by adherence to established safety procedures.
