We are looking for a wonderful new Development Director to lead our digital development practice. You will be that epic person who balances being a great digital technologist, with a genuine love for leading and growing people and teams. Your leadership skills will be complemented by your deep understanding of digital architectures, technologies and development best practices. You will bring empathy, a sense of humour, and loads of energy (with sides in organisation and pragmatism) to the role. As a member of the senior leadership team, you will report to the CEO.
At Alphero, we are a digital agency crafting some of the most impactful digital solutions in New Zealand (and Australia!) We need someone who will not only be up to speed with modern codebases and development tools and methodologies, but whose curious nature will see them always looking over the horizon and tuning in to what capabilities and technologies we’ll need tomorrow. This knowledge and vision will enable you to work with the CEO to set the future direction for our technology practice.
Ideally you will have a strong track record of running a development or engineering practice (or team) in a digital agency or IT consulting company.
On a day-to-day basis you’ll lead, and grow our talented and dedicated mobile, web and cloud engineers. You will understand our active and upcoming programmes of work, and be able to manage priorities and balance who works on what to make sure we deliver on our promises to our clients. You will be a great communicator, collaborating with project managers, designers, QA and clients to empower our developers to deliver high quality, game-changing products. From time to time you might be hands-on (strategically) with some clients whether through supporting our sales team in pre-sales, or providing technical direction and advice.

About You
You will have 10 to 15+ years’ experience in a digital agency, or IT consultancy or services business, with a solid understanding of typical commercial models, and a proven track record of running a successful development practice or team. You’ll have the leadership skills to guide and inspire people to do their best work and the practical skills to create sound processes, and balance resourcing across projects. You’ll also have broad, holistic technical knowledge, ideally skewing towards full-stack and cloud.
This role is definitively Wellington-based but we are open to supporting the right candidate to relocate either from around New Zealand or if you are looking to return from overseas.
If you aren’t based in Wellington (but are in New Zealand, or in process applying for a visa) we may contribute towards relocation costs and/or help with getting your visa sorted.
