Summary This position is located in the Resident Services Directorate, Leisure & Wellness, Recreational Activities Division, at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. The mission of AFRH is to fulfill our nation’s commitment to its veterans by providing a premier retirement community with exceptional residential care and extensive support services. Responsibilities As an Art Specialist, you will: Oversee all activities in the Ceramics Studio, Woodshop, Multi-craft rooms, Art Colony, and Sewing Room. Teach a variety of classes to the Independent Living, Independent Living Plus, Assisted Living residents, and Long-Term Care residents outside of the Ceramics Studio. Coordinate special events such as annual crafts fairs and exhibits on Home grounds. Coordinate resident involvement with community craft shows and competition; this involves encouraging resident participation, transporting the entries to and from the judging site and a follow upreport of the event. Hold quarterly committee meetings within the different hobby areas and prepares the record, minutes from the meetings. Assist in the “Health Check” process to insure the Health and well-being of the AFRH-W residents. Requirements Conditions of Employment The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. For the GS-07, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: – Planning, supervising, administering, or carrying out an educational, recreational, cultural, or other art program such as art festivals, competitions, or workshops; AND – Performing as an artist; OR – Demonstrating the methods and techniques of one or more art forms such as graphics, sculpture, pottery and ceramics, or metalwork and jewelry. OR You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows:1 academic year of graduate education with a major study in the fine or applied arts (18 semesters or 27 quarters) OR Bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement with a major study of the fine or applied arts OR You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-7, you must have been at the GS-5 level for 52 weeks Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment. Because the AFRH’s mission requires uninterrupted, direct human support and medical care for its Residents, this position is considered essential for continuing AFRH operations. Therefore, the incumbent is expected to arrive for duty on time, as scheduled, and to complete the assigned tour during emergency situations such as hazardous weather.
