We are looking for a reliable and committed individual who enjoys dealing with people. You will cover a wide range of safety and security duties including: general patrol, prevent and help detect crime, inspect and secure access points, fire safety, welfare support and engagement with the student community.
Led by the Head of Security with the support of the Campus Safety leadership team, your role will be to protect the Aston University community, as well as prevent damage to or loss of University property. You will ensure as far as possible that the Aston University Campus is a safe, secure and enjoyable environment for students, staff and visitors.
Educated to GSCE level or equivalent you should have previous security, policing or armed forces experience and have an inquisitive eye for detail, excellent communication skills and the ability to tackle problems. The Campus Safety Team are not your typical ‘security operative’ – we do so much more. We play a significant role in enhancing the student experience at Aston and go ‘above and beyond’ to ensure that our students thrive and achieve the best outcomes for their future. We also provide advice to staff and visitors on how to improve safety and address any concerns appropriately.
Do you have the ability and skills to tackle problems and deal with them before they escalate? Can you show empathy and support our students when they need us? Do you look at a safety or security issue far beyond what it appears on the surface? Are you a team player who can work with key stakeholders such as the police? Can you complete thorough statements and reports for use in criminal, civil or internal proceedings? If so, we would like to hear from you.
The role reports directly to the respected shift Team Leader. Each of the four Campus Safety teams consist of a Team Leader, Control Room Operator and 4 x Campus Safety Officers.
The role involves working a shift pattern covering all 365 days of the calendar year and includes night shifts, weekends and bank holidays. The current pattern is 2 day shifts (06:30 -18:40), followed by two night shifts (18:30 – 06:40) followed by four rest days.
Please note it is a requirement of this role to hold a Security Industry Authority (SIA) Door Supervisor license and involves an enhanced DBS check. If the successful applicant does not hold one, there will be a requirement to complete the necessary training and secure the SIA license within three months of joining.
Please note that anonymous shortlisting will be carried out for this role as part of Aston University’s commitment to equality and diversity and ensuring a fair and consistent approach to recruitment. Personal details that are included on application forms, including the candidate’s name and address will not be disclosed to the shortlisting panel. We kindly ask that candidates do not send CVs or cover letters as these will not be considered. Please note that only answers that fall within the application form questions will be assessed.
