With the pace of financial innovation, the Bank of Canada needs to understand the implications of developments in financial technologies for the Canadian financial system. You will be part of the Fintech Policy and Research Division (FPRD) that leads, contributes, and coordinates the Financial Stability Department’s research and policy advice on Fintech and Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) to the Bank of Canada’s Governing Council.
What you will do
You will be part of policy and research projects, analyze complex economic and policy issues, provide insight, generate innovative solutions, and develop tools for monitoring developments in fintech, including cryptocurrencies, CBDC, DeFi, paytechs, and BigTechs. You will also prepare analytical notes and briefing material for Governing Council and respond to requests from senior leadership and other departments.

What you need to succeed
You have understanding of fintech and cryptoassets business models and the relevant data that could be used to monitor developments. You also have an understanding of the Canadian financial and/or payment system and have conducted related financial statement analysis.
You are a good communicator capable of clearly and compellingly communicate information and ideas to a variety of target audiences. You can work on multiple projects which will require you to organize your work effectively, setting priorities to ensure follow-through and project completion in a timely manner.
You are proficient with statistical software and programming languages such as Python, R, and/or Stata.
You are capable of working collaboratively and able to build relationships with internal and external partners (e.g., government and international agencies, other central banks, financial market participants and organizations, and outside academics) to share knowledge, research and analysis.

Your education and experience
This position requires a master’s degree in Economics, Finance, Computer Science, Mathematics or Statistics or a combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Senior Economist
Economist
Candidates whose experience and/or educational background may not be at the level being recruited for will be considered for a position within the accelerated progression stream program. The accelerated progression stream is for economists and financial sector specialists and is defined by four levels P1 to P4. In this program the employees acquire the skills over a number of years to reach the working level of a Senior Economist/Senior Analyst at the job grade 17.
