The Benton County Civil Service Commission is now accepting applications to establish an eligibility list to fill current and future positions in the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. We currently have one position open. Applicants must have the legal right to work in the U.S.; be at least 21 years of age; possess a valid WA state driver’s license; have a high school diploma or a certificate of equivalency, and no prior felony convictions. This position requires a neat appearance, ability to work with the public and other employees, good handwriting and physical dexterity to efficiently operate computers, copy machines and multi-line telephone systems.
Salary range: $3,405.00 – $4,419.00, per month plus benefits
Location: Kennewick, possibly Prosser
Employment type: Regular full time, bargaining

Performs a variety of journey-level clerical and office tasks in the Sheriff’s department, requiring specific knowledge of departmental functions and procedures. Assignments may include: assisting with case file maintenance; establishing and updating detailed record keeping systems; verifying and entering data; preparation of warrants, legal documents, reports, and other correspondence; and/or more extensive detailed servicing of the public.
Provides background checks and other requested information to officers and authorized agencies, accessing local, state and federal computerized record systems.
Completes regularly recurring reports; compiles data from varied sources and makes summary reports as required.
Types and distributes forms, correspondence, case reports, warrants, memoranda, statistics and schedules from hand written drafts or notes or verbal instructions by using office machines as Microsoft Office, excel, scanner, calculator, photocopier and other standard office equipment. Composes and proofs material to assure proper layout, grammatical composition and inclusion of all pertinent information.
Assists the public by issuing concealed weapon permits, processing or receiving various applications, record check requests, documents, and forms, and/or scheduling appointments
Sends, originates, receives, and routes teletype messages for the Sheriff’s office.
Provides liaison between the department and other law enforcement agencies, the court, Prosecutor’s office, and other agencies, coordinating department activities and schedules as authorized
May assist with coordination of arrangements for prisoner transports into the County
Performs other related duties as assigned.
High school diploma, or G.E.D., two years of progressively responsible clerical experience in a law enforcement environment; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
Successful certification for terminal operation by WACIC/NCIC prior to or after employment.
NOTE: Prior to employment, a polygraph test and a thorough criminal history check will be completed on each successful applicant.
Knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment.
Knowledge of the functions, procedures, and applicable regulations of the Sheriff’s department and law enforcement
Knowledge of basic math, including the ability to add, subtracts, multiply and divide accurately.
Knowledge of and ability to apply business and legal English, composition, grammar, spelling punctuation, and letter format
Working knowledge of bookkeeping practices and procedures
Good oral communications skills to explain policies and procedures and to deal with other employees, law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and the general public using courtesy, tact and good judgment.
Applicants must possess strong communication skills and be service oriented. They must also possess high morals, an ethical character and have a positive attitude.
Skill in operating standard office equipment such as Microsoft Office, scanner, calculator and photocopies
Ability to learn to operate teletype equipment
Ability to read, understands, apply and explain County/department policies and procedures.
Ability to work independently, organizing work with a minimum of supervision.
Ability to establish and maintain complex manual and computerized filing and record keeping systems.
Ability to maintain the security and confidentiality of police records and information.
Ability to work quickly, accurately and thoroughly with close attention to detail to meet deadlines.
Ability to type at level required for specific position.
