The Beth-El Center is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides support services and advocacy to those experiencing homelessness and hunger within the Greater Milford community. Through our 34-bed homeless shelter, food service programs, diversion services and outreach and engagement efforts, we offer individuals, families and veteran’s long-term solutions to help them reclaim their lives.

SUMMARY: Responsible for general oversight of the shelter for the duration of shift. The No Freeze Crisis Counselor maintains the security of the shelter and safety of its clients. The counselor must be awake and alert at all times to respond to needs of clients and crisis situations as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Experience working with homeless or other disadvantaged population
• Demonstrate maturity, good judgment and ability to respond quickly & calmly in crisis situations and to follow directions
• Ability to interact with clients and build relationships with them while ensuring their needs are being met
• Strong communication skills, conflict resolution skills, and crisis intervention skills are required
• Able to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and related software.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

• Maintain proper supervision of shelter clients and order within the shelter during the work shift
• Review events of the previous shift by reading the Daily Log Book at the beginning of work shift
• Maintain security of shelter and safety of all residents by:
• Handling any crisis situations in a calm manner, communicating with supervisor(s) for guidance and/or direction when necessary
• Discharging any resident who is being unruly or disruptive
• Calling the police (911) when necessary in the event of unruly/violent behavior and the client does not agree to leave
• Complete all necessary paperwork (including daily tally sheets, attendance sheet, log book documentation, incident reports)
• Document all activities and incidents in the Daily Log Book throughout the shift and at the end of the shift.
• Give wake-up call for all residents and supervise chores as assigned
• Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 3 years of Human Services experience.
