As a Parks Leader / Equipment Operator II in Parks & Roads Services, you will perform Parks Leader and Equipment Operator II work as needed. Duties include:

Parks Leader

• Providing field level supervision (up to 25 employees) and hands on leadership for crews performing a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual duties in the delivery of work plans, which includes scheduling, timesheet approvals and performance management
• Keeping apprised with the current horticulture procedures and best practices
• Maintaining effective working relationships with customers, the public and crew members
• Provide field level supervision and hands on leadership for crews, as well as participate in performing a wide variety of semi-skilled manual duties in the delivery of approved work plans
• All aspects of staffing related to field work; trains, directs and supervises staff; participates with coaching staff in a way that creates a culture for growth and development.
• Set daily priorities, participate and implement work plans according to approved work standards and schedules, inspecting and approving completed work
• Assisting with the registration, orientation/training and mentoring of staff
• Promoting and ensuring a safe work environment in accordance with The City of Edmonton and Occupational Health & Safety policies and procedures
• Other duties as assigned

Equipment Operator II

• Operate a brush truck and a chipper
• Deliver and haul material to and from job sites
• Load and unload trucks with material
• Various tree maintenance related activities with the above equipment
• Stump grinding and raking/ piling of grindings
• Snow clearing and removal from parking lot utilizing skid steer, tool cat or articulating front end loader
• Daily maintenance on equipment
• Daily record keeping
• Perform other related duties as require
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Completion of a two (2) year diploma program in arboriculture/horticulture or related field or Red Seal Journeyman Landscape/Horticulturist
• Tree maintenance experience including tree pruning, stump grinding, tree planting and tree removals
• Three (3) years of directly related experience in all aspects of horticulture/ arboriculture work, with a minimum of 1 year in a supervisory capacity.
• Demonstrated supervisory skills and abilities, including the ability to lead, train, and develop effective work crews
• Possession of current Standard First Aid certification
• WHMIS
• Front end loader certificate
• Tool cat certificate
• Completion of the City of Edmonton Aspiring Leaders/Pre-Supervisor training upon commencement into the position; applicants not in possession of this training may be considered and if selected will be required to complete the training within a mutually agreeable time frame
• Valid Alberta Class 3 licence, with air brake endorsement or provincial equivalent. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
• Knowledge of City policies, procedures, standards, and relevant legislation
• Ability to solve problems and make independent decisions
• Ability to inspect and approve work completed by crews
• Ability to communicate and deal effectively with staff, the public, civic departments and outside organizations
• Ability to implement annual work plan and assist in the management of financial resources
• Ability to complete time cards, daily work records and interpret work assignments
• Ability to respond to inquiries/complaints in a manner that is polite and sensitive to the needs of the public
• Extensive knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in forestry operations and transportation
• Good knowledge of the methods and practices used in servicing and maintaining the equipment
• Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices and rules of the safe operation of the assigned equipment and occupational hazards applicable to the work. Must have the required competency to perform work safely
• Conduct work in a manner that complies with the requirements set out in th City’s Environmental Management System (EMS)
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and have experience using a chipper
• Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of this position
• Willingness to work in all weather conditions
• Applicants may be tested

Assets:

• Training in tree hazard assessment, tree pruning, tree felling & chainsaw safety (Arbor Culture Canada) bolting and cabling, tree pest & disease, and electrical awareness is an asset
• Possession of current International Society of Arborists (ISA) certification
• Knowledge of heavy equipment operations, including aerial units

Up to 1 temporary full-time positions for up to 11 months

Hours of work: Up to 40 hours per week. 24-hour, 7-day coverage, including weekends and night shifts, is required

Salary:

Equipment Operator II: $31.575 (Hourly)

Parks Leader: $35.925 (Hourly)
