POSITION FUNCTION
The Extreme Weather Support Worker position is responsible for providing on-call support to facilities providing Victoria’s vulnerable populations relief during the City’s warmest and coldest days when other facilities may not be available.
The City of Victoria partners with external organizations to provide warming/cooling centers for the purpose of giving critical relief to vulnerable populations, including those who may be experiencing homelessness and/or facing barriers related to addiction, mental health, physical and/or cognitive disabilities and other issues associated with marginalization.
KEY DUTIES
Reporting to the Emergency Program Coordinator, Extreme Weather Support Workers work at different warming/cooling center locations in the downtown core and are responsible for:
Hours of work will be variable with operations being entirely weather dependent; relief facilities will activate based on threshold criteria set by the BC Centre for Disease Control, Environment Canada, and BC Housing’s Extreme Weather Response Plan. Shifts will be scheduled with as much notice as possible; this is an on-call position and may be scheduled within 24 hours of relief center activation.
Activation criteria will be based on anticipated weather factors from Environment Canada forecasts (or other weather forecasting services) including:
Perform related duties where qualified.
INDEPENDENCE
Work is performed according to established protocol or is assigned by supervisor and reviewed upon completion.
Problems are referred to supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Effort:
Lift and move light materials and equipment. (often)
Perform tasks requiring repetitious movements such as light cleaning, sweeping, and vacuuming. (often)
Mental Effort:
Normal.
Visual/Auditory Effort:
Normal.
Work Environment:
Exposure to challenging interactions with members of the public. (occasional)
Potential exposure to verbally abusive individuals. (occasional)
KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Understand and carry out job related functions.
Knowledge of administrative, procedural, and cleaning procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
Grade 10.
Required to obtain criminal record clearance.
Experience:
Not required.
OTHER:
This is an on-call shift position.
Work schedule: As needed
$28.24 per hour, Pay Grade 3
