A Tax Accountant is an experienced professional with knowledge and some experience with analytic principles, practices, concepts, and theories in direct and indirect taxation. The incumbent applies principles of tax law with some supervision and contributes to the development of Taxation policies and procedures based on professional methods, business principles, and practical experience. The incumbent assists in the development of the company’s tax operations, including tax accounting, tax compliance, regulatory taxation, controls, and planning. The incumbent assists in tax strategy and operations through interactions with key stakeholders including, Accounting, Treasury, Financial Planning, Internal Audit, external auditors, consultants and the IRS Compliance Assurance team.
Key Responsibilities
Contribute and assist in modeling tax implications to internal stakeholders advising on tax matters pertaining to tax regulations and law
Support Tax Accounting and Compliance Manager in preparing reports for senior management and other stakeholders on impact analysis of tax regulations, tax implications, tax law changes and make recommendations on strategies to optimize the impact
Participate in the development of tax and compliance governance, standards, procedures, processes and metrics frameworks; ensure compliance with internal controls, policies and procedures and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance
Assist and prepare monthly tax provision (ASC 740); maintain understanding of general accounting policies to ensure accurate recording of book to tax differences
Assist in the preparation of tax return filings, payments, and extensions; prepare supporting tax return schedules and calculations
Prepare reconciliations of tax accounts; provide supporting documents and schedules for account balances
Gather information to assist the resolution of tax audits and requests from taxing authorities
Assist with the planning and strategy for regulatory (LPSC & FERC) departments on tax implications and laws; support regulatory departments in filings and information requests related to tax
Assist with tax forecasts and projections; assist with reporting on the tax outlook for materials for internal and external stakeholders
Recommends tax strategies by researching federal, state, and local taxation issues
Provide high quality customer service to internal and external stakeholders in response to questions pertaining to Tax Accounting and Compliance
Support Tax Accounting and Compliance Manager with the development and implementation of appropriate metrics to manage business risks and improve decision making; consider future implications beyond an immediate problem
Assist with process automation and design by identifying areas to reduce routine manual tasks
Contribute innovative ideas and collaborate with Manager, Tax Accounting and Compliance to develop and drive continuous improvement of Tax service delivery and processes
Actively engage in process improvement initiatives to enhance Tax service delivery and processes
Use data and analytics to support continuous improvement and improve program quality; participate in the integration and/or improvement of current systems (e.g., SAP, OneSource, Vertex) and analytical techniques to enhance/streamline current operations
Demonstrate ethical business conduct and compliance with both the letter and spirit of all laws, rules and regulations to which Cleco is subject

Qualifications
Required Education, Experience, & Skill
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field
3+ years of related experience
Report to the Pineville General Office Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday every week
Experience with financial systems/SAP preferred
Experience with Microsoft tools and applications required
Knowledge of leading practices in Taxation
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Internal Control processes
Strong problem-solving, planning, and project management skills
Willingness and ability to learn new technologies on the job
Proficient at functioning effectively within a team environment, present ideas and opinions in a respective and collegial manner
