Optometry Assistant/Patient Care Technician
Clinical Responsibilities:
Responsible for opening and closing of all exam lanes properly.
Check To Do’s and email daily
Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology.
Ensure that the doctor’s patients are brought in and seen in a timely manner; report any concerns in this area to management immediately and inform FD of running behind to facilitate patient flow.
Ensure that all patients are comfortable and all concerns are addressed
Perform entrance testing on patients such as but not limited to VA, EOM, CVF, pupils, etc. and report any changes to the doctor
Verify and update medical history and medications at each exam.
Ensure that all information documented in a patients chart is accurate
Scribe accurately and thoroughly document ophthalmic exams and procedures as they are being performed by the physician through EHR entry. Anticipating physican needs is necessary.
List all appropriate diagnosis and symptoms as well as followup instructions and prescriptions as directed by the physician.
Accurately documents the plans thoroughly including all testing, orders for labs, recommendations and rationale for all as directed by physician.
Send all medication orders accurately via Eprescribe.
Perform testing including:
Monitor supplies in exam lanes and tech stations as to provide inventory person with enough notice when something is needed
Stock all rooms at the beginning, middle, and end of each day
Follow new patient referral procedure for all patients for any doctor
Working with Doctor as assigned(in all offices): Assess patient exam needs (yearly, procedure, FU, consults, PF, etc.) and perform workup efficiently
Communicate patient complaints and history to doctor
Lensometry when needed
Collect/record information re: chief complaint and eye diagnosis history
Identify patients needing testing and/or procedures and perform as directed by doctor
saAssist with Dr. To Do’s, particularly billing questions, NS/CX and records release
Educating patients regarding ocular diagnosis, treatment plans, surgical options
Identify patients needing dictation – Start To Do to Dr. to prompt dictationReport to manager if dictation becomes more than 2 weeks overdue
Assist with Meaningful use – patient education, CCD documents, E-Rx, etc.
Maintain patient flow daily to ensure running on time
Code all exam types with accuracy according to insurance guidelines to limit routing slip errors.
Review routing slips at the end of each day for completion to limit routing slip
questions.
Maintain cleanliness of tech station and chart room daily in any office
Approach all staff in a respectful and professional manner
Assist any doctor/tech as needed with patient care, including emergencies
Bring any and all out-of-the-ordinary occurrences to the attention of your Manager immediately, including but not limited to, upset/unsatisfied/aggressive patients, theft, fire alarm, fire, potential safety issues, staff personal issues that may require management acknowledgement, attention, or action, etc
Partake in Team Game while encouraging others to actively participate
All technicians/nurses will go through a training process including optical. All knowledge of training must be applied in daily patient workup.
Attend all NT meetings scheduled monthly.
Become COA certified
