Summary See below for important information regarding this job. Responsibilities Installs, modifies, maintains and repairs new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment. Determines tools and estimates materials required. Troubleshoots and analyzes defects. Repair, troubleshoot, and test chemical levels, and maintains and installs heating equipment and auxiliary mechanisms including water heaters, high pressure boiler systems, convertors, piping, and related heating components and units. Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and layout the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of equipment. Installs, modifies, and repair of new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for a Pipefitter, your resume and supporting documentation must support: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and that you have the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. Physical Effort: Works on ladders, scaffolds and platforms which requires hard to reach places and in strained positions. Required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally may lift and carry items weighing about 50 pounds. Also, exerts heavy physical effort, constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet and legs to maneuver controls when operating Engineering Equipment. Working Conditions: Work is done inside and outside in all kinds of weather and incumbent is exposed to infection and disease, areas that are dirty, dusty and greasy, and subject to noise, vibrations, and fumes. Required to use a gas mask or respirator due to noxious gases and carbon monoxide. Subject to serious accidents. Emergency Employee: The incumbent of this position has been designated as an emergency employee. The term “Emergency Employee” is used to designate those employees who must report to work in emergency situations. Emergency dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to these employees. The employees who occupy these positions may be required to report for duty in any situation that prevents significant numbers of employees in the local area from reporting for work on time or which requires agencies to close all or part of their activities.
