He angitūtanga | About the role
With a large variety of recreation, historic, and biodiversity assets to manage, we are always on the lookout for skilled professionals who can ensure that our assets are being managed well and maintained to a safe standard. Our assets include huts, campgrounds, tracks, bridges and wharves.
As an Asset Inspector with the Department of Conservation, you will play a critical role in the maintenance of our facilities and protecting our natural environment. You will be responsible for verifying that our tracks, huts, and structures are up to standard. You will work with district offices, providing support and assistance as they carry out their field work.
This role will see you support the Eastern North Island region, from Wairoa on the East Cape, through to Whakatane, Tauranga and Rotorua. Travel across the region will be required, as well as some overnight and multiday trips away from home.
Some of the locations you’ll be working in each day include the Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park, Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park, Karangahake Gorge, and the Rotorua Lakes. This is a unique opportunity to make one of these historical locations your workplace!

To succeed in this role, you will need to have a passion for conservation or recreation in the outdoors, as well as outdoor experience, excellent fitness, and self-awareness. You should also have some practical experience with the types of assets that you would be assessing.

The salary range for this position is $58,314 to $73,401 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
