BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Administrator, the Recreation Therapy Manager plans, organizes, develops, and directs the overall operation of the Recreation Therapy Department. Plans and implements individual care plans for each resident to maintain or improve their quality of life. Develops and implements adequate and appropriate therapeutic programs designed to meet the interests and the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of each resident. Coordinate quality improvement activities to improve safety and clinical outcomes. Provide staff education on areas of expertise to improve staff development.
SECTION II
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
BS degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation, or related field and at least two years experience in a long term health care setting or at least two years qualifying experience to fulfill the Federal, State, and DOH requirements for the position of Recreation Therapy Manager as mandated by regulations. National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification required.
Possess ability to develop, organize, and implement systems to facilitate an ongoing therapeutic activity program.
Creative, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
Work well in cooperation with others.
SECTION III
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The position is located indoors/outdoors under normal working conditions. Should be able to push/pull 25 lbs.; lift/move 15 lbs. from floor to table; be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing and filing for extended periods of time; must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing, and using photocopiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to sit at a computer terminal or work station for a prolonged period of time, as well as walk to transport residents.

Sensory requirements include the ability to articulate and comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to read the English language.

Develop and implement therapeutic activities/programs that meet Federal, State, DOH, and NCTRC standards and regulations.
Remain current with Federal and State standards and regulations and their interpretation by surveyors.
Review policies and procedures and programs annually to assure compliant with regulations. Make revisions when appropriate
Prepare a system for reporting on the compliance and effectiveness of the therapeutic activity program and provide report to the Administrator.
Procure supplies and therapeutic and adaptive equipment in order to meet resident needs.
Coordinate food service, maintaining dietary restrictions for special resident events.
Develop, implement, monitor, and manage a seven (7) day a week therapeutic program to meet the psychosocial needs of the residents and the NCTRC standards.
Develop monthly activity calendars with information on scheduled programs seven (7) days a week including evening programs.
Communicate program changes/ cancellations/additions to Nurse Managers and Administrator.
Ensure the offering of program variety in order to meet the need of all residents.

Incorporate program suggestions provided from Resident Council and Family Forum.
Develop and manage special recreational events to meet social needs of the residents and families. Work with other department managers to ensure appropriate coordination for these events.
Identify special recreational events and schedule monthly.
Maintain facility van to ensure it is safe and road worthy.
Facilitate outside trips using the facility van.
Assess residents to identify social functioning, leisure interests, physical and cognitive functioning, and prepare individualized care plans.
Complete an initial assessment of resident upon admission and throughout resident’s stay as required.
Participate as a member of the interdisciplinary care team to develop and implement coordinated plans of care.
Maintain all documentation and communication in a timely and accurate manner to ensure that appropriate PRI and MDS activity information is maintained in the resident’s individual medical record.
Responsible for timely completion of MDS assessments, per policy.
Responsible for completing assessments, progress notes, care plans, and other documentation per policy.
Direct the Recreation Therapy Department staff and volunteers in implementing therapeutic programs scheduled.
Conducts annual performance reviews of staff, per policy.
Provide coaching, guidance, and oversight of Recreation Therapy Aides.
Responsible for ensuring staff adherence to Employee Health and Healthstream requirements.
Meet, at least monthly, with staff to solicit feedback on program response, problems, recommendations, and other aspects to improve programs.
Provide residents with therapeutic activities which ensure cognitive, physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being.

Counsel and discipline staff, per policy; maintain appropriate documentation.

Participates as a member of the senior administrative staff of Ellis Center.
Serve on relevant committees and attend management meetings as required.
Participate in the budget process and planning for Ellis Center.
Keep Administrator and Administrative Team informed of all pertinent matters.
Perform audits and other quality improvement activities as requested.
Monitor expenditures and recommend cost saving/containment ideas.
Coordinate and work with other Directors and Managers to attain Ellis Center and Ellis Medicine goals and objectives.
Maintain clinical competence and knowledge of specialized resources available, function as a mentor to staff.

Support the nurse educator and Interdisciplinary Team by providing education to staff on Recreation Therapy matters and other areas of expertise.

Effectively utilize a variety of teaching methodologies appropriate for the targeted learner.
Demonstrate ability to use adult teaching/learning strategies in an effective manner.
Provide consultative services to staff, residents and family members regarding matters of recreation therapy and quality.
Adheres to hospital/nursing facility policies and procedures related to:
Mandatory education
Annual health assessment
Licensure verification
Continuing and mandatory education requirements will be completed as scheduled.
Complete annual health assessment form as required, maintains current inoculations.
Interacts with others in a courteous and professional manner and adheres to the MEE behaviors and standards.
