The General Medicine service is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Physician who shares our vision for better care for our patients. The service comprises 5 teams of 6-7 consultants. Each ward-based team of consultants has in addition 3 Registrars and 3 House Officers. We are an inclusive, friendly team with excellent relationships amongst colleagues with varied subspecialty interests including infectious diseases, immunology and obstetric medicine. We are well supported by junior staff and we take regular annual and CME leave.
As a SMO you will work a rotation with three clinical weeks followed by one non-clinical week devoted to additional duties such as teaching, relieving absent SMOs plus continuing medical education prior to the weekend on call.

Context
The General Medicine Department provides assessment, diagnosis and management to the patients who present to the General Medicine Department. The component of this role is to promote and maintain a quality service for the care of patients attending the Department of General Medicine.
We are a large General Medical Department with 5 base wards, 33 SMOs (Senior Medical Officers) and 15 teams working every day to manage the inpatient work. In addition we have General Medical clinics several times a week and Hospital In The Home services, which are currently expanding into new pathways/clinical diagnoses.
There is an expansive educational programme which includes journal clubs, grand rounds, and weekly teaching sessions. SMOs within the department have a wide variety of specialty interests including Older Peoples Health, Immunology, Obstetric Medicine, Medical Education and Infectious Diseases this role could be potentially combined with a specialty role dependent upon the skills of the candidate.
We have a wealth of experience in supporting SMOs eligible for provisional vocational registration from overseas joining our department and can provide support through the process.
Key Accountabilities:
1. Practice as a Senior Medical Officer in General Medicine
Clinical practice is carried out to professional standards and legal requirements in accordance with policies and procedures. Patient care is provided in conjunction with other clinicians. Patients referred to inpatient specialities as clinically appropriate. Participation in the General Medicine Department clinical roster as agreed with the Clinical Director. Work in collaborative partnership with members of the interdisciplinary team.
2. Teaching/Research
Establish and use knowledge base to teach medical, nursing and support staff and to participate in clinical audit programmes. Participate in department teaching and training programme as required, including M&M, journal club.
3. To contribute to the overall service of the Department by:
Ensuring resources are used effectively and that departmental priorities are met.
Supporting key goals. Provide cost effective care and assist the department to remain within budget. Ensuring patient care is safe, clinical practice is appropriate and department practice is innovative and evidence based. Ensuring culturally appropriate patient care by assisting staff to understand the diverse needs of the Maori population and by liaising with the relevant cultural advisers to provide the appropriate standard of care. Dealing with conflict situations, working to achieve a win-win situation. Meeting OSH requirements, including ensuring compliance within the department with Health & Safety requirements and encouraging proactive hazard identification and management. Participate in departmental governance and research activity. Supervision on RMOs
4. To be responsible for aspects of own professional development by
Establishing annual goals, objectives, performance targets and strategies to meet these. Attending educational opportunities relevant to the role. Qualifications
Education and Qualifications Essential
MBChB or overseas equivalent as determined by MCNZ
Experience/Knowledge
Specialist post-graduate experience as either a general medicine advanced trainee.
Recent experience of managing General Medicine inpatients.
Demonstrated General Medicine ability in a consultant position
Knowledge or willingness to learn of the implications of the Treaty of Waitangi with a commitment to biculturalism.
