Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains Without Compensation status ( WOC ) with Edward Hines Jr. VA in the case of an emergency in which we have to relocate animals to their Veterinary Medical Unit ( VMU ) as per our Emergency Memorandum of Understanding ( MOU ).
Assists in the interviewing process.
Maintains and updates work schedules taking into account time off, including weekend work schedules. Areas to schedule include cage wash, large animals and small animals.
Maintains and updates room assignments and room entry order.
Provides orientation and training of CMF Technicians in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); monitors performance of Technicians; oversees operations of daily and monthly work schedules.
Responsible for enforcement of policies and procedures by CMF husbandry and cage wash staff including performance reviews and initiation of disciplinary procedures as needed.
Performs a weekly walk through of the vivarium to ensure work schedules, policies and procedures are being followed.
Maintains physical plant in accordance with federal regulations and AAALAC standards.
Responsible for the initiation, status and progress of work orders pertaining to facility maintenance and repair items, status of equipment repair and procurement.
Monitors and ensures compliance with environmental factors in animal rooms and support areas; including husbandry duties, temperature, humidity and light cycles.
Monitors facility security.
Maintains fiscal accountability for the husbandry section.
Oversees maintenance of permanent data such as: environmental records, including temperature, humidity and light cycles; husbandry logs; animal census tracking; equipment and supply inventory, etc. Audits individual animal records, including experimental records.
Assists in development and revision of SOPs.
Responsible to the Assistant Director for reports as assigned.
Holds weekly staff meetings as needed to discuss updates, challenges, review training and policies.
Assures departmental compliance with all federal regulations ( OLAW , USDA , FDA ) and accreditation standards ( AAALAC International).
Address any animal, staff/vet staff, and research concerns in a confident and professional manner.
Maintains supply inventory and request supplies as needed.
Provides orientation for research staff; assists and trains them in proper access to the animal housing facilities; restraint and handling techniques and other specialized techniques as assigned.
Responsible for coordination of incoming and outgoing animal shipments, assignment of animal housing and proper space utilization. Responsible for oversight of specialty programs such as breeding colonies, barrier facilities, biohazards, quarantine and isolation.
Alternates On-Call status with Assistant Director on weekends and Holidays.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Bachelor’s degree in related field and three years of relevant experience.
Qualifications
Knowledge of Rodent Colony/Barrier Management.
Experience in scheduling and leading employees.
Knowledge of Federal regulations and AAALAC standards.
LATG Certification preferred. Required after one year.
Certificates/Credentials/Licenses
Bachelor’s in Biology, Animal Science or associated field with three years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience in laboratory animal science or veterinary medicine. Laboratory Animal Technologist ( LATG ) Certification preferred.
