The Role:
We are looking to appoint an Academic and Study Skills Tutor on a part-time, permanent basis. Academic and Study Skills provision at Manchester Metropolitan University is provided by a dynamic team of over 20 learning development specialists, supported by a full-time administrator. The team undertakes diverse teaching and learning activities to promote academic success and an enhanced learning experience for all students.
Our tutors work in partnership with students at all levels (from foundation year through to doctoral study) and across all degree programmes. Through close collaboration with faculty-based colleagues, tutors plan and teach bespoke academic and study skills sessions that are embedded into credit-bearing courses and units. This provision is supplemented by a comprehensive extra-curricular offer open to all students, including workshops, short courses, one-to-one tutorials, and online self-study materials. The successful candidate will contribute to all aspects of our provision. The postholder will also develop digital learning materials to support the continual enhancement of the service. They must be comfortable in teaching in online and on-campus environments, ranging from one-to-one tutorials through to large group settings.
The Candidate:
Inclusivity and accessibility underpin all our work, so candidates must understand issues affecting students’ learning experience in a diverse higher education environment. Ultimately, Academic and Study Skills Tutors contribute to the innovative development and delivery of learning development provision that is designed to empower students to excel at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Applicants must be educated to degree level or equivalent. This position is primarily a teaching role, so candidates must demonstrate suitable teaching experience, perhaps through holding a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, equivalent qualification, or relevant membership (e.g., Fellowship of Advance HE). This position would not be suitable for an early career teacher. The team regularly engages in continuous professional development, with lots of opportunities provided to share best practice within and beyond the team.
Working Pattern:
The successful candidate will work 3 days a week. They will work Thursdays and Fridays, with the third day to be confirmed in discussion with the hiring manager.
To Apply:
All applications must be made through the online portal. In completing your application, please make sure to upload a CV (no more than 3 pages), together with a letter outlining your ability to perform the role and relevant experience. In addressing the criteria questions (the final part of the application), please keep each response to no more than 250 words.
If you have any questions, informal enquiries can be made by emailing Dr Chad McDonald ([email protected]) or Kate Haley ([email protected]), Senior Academic and Study Skills Tutors.
In recognition of staff contributions to the University’s achievements during the 2021/2022 academic year, an additional discretionary payment of 2% per annum will be added to your salary until 31/07/23 in order to ensure consistency amongst existing and incoming staff. This additional 2% will be paid pro rata in equal monthly instalments, on top of your salary each month until 31/07/23.
Manchester Metropolitan University is committed to supporting the rights, responsibilities, dignity, health and wellbeing of staff and students through our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
We promote applications from all sections of the community, irrespective of background, belief or identity, recognising the benefits that a diverse organisation can bring .
