The theatre healthcare assistant performs preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative duties to facilitate the delivery of quality patient care in a safe environment.

The theatre healthcare assistant provides assistance to the surgeon during the operation under the direction and supervision of that individual surgeon and in accordance with all hospital policies.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Under the direct supervision of nursing staff, assist with cleaning and preparation of Theatre for surgical lists.
• Determine specific equipment needed for all procedures as per individual consultant protocol.
• Ensure all equipment necessary for daily lists is clean and in good working order including diathermy, suction, tourniquet, camera, screens, light source theatre lighting, ensuring the ventilation is on and functioning in line with national theatre protocols. Report defects to the CNM 2.
• Ensure scans/x-rays for patients are available for reference.
• Assist in moving and positioning of patient as per policy.
• Placement of pneumatic tourniquet with confirmation of limb pressure with individual surgeon.
• Assist with draping of patient within surgeon’s guidelines maintaining sterility.
• Provide retraction of tissue for optimal visualization with regard to tissue type and appropriate retraction instrumentation and/or technique.
• Maintain integrity of the sterile field.
• Maintain patient dignity.
• Daily re-stocking of supplies and pharmaceuticals and correct rotation of same.
• Ensure stock trolleys are clean and items are in date, expiry dates checked monthly.
• Assist theatre personnel in providing a high standard of care, maintaining best practice in the delivery of care to the patients during the perioperative phase.
• Attend all mandatory training as appropriate to the role.
• Perform any other duties deemed necessary within the perioperative setting as directed by the surgeon or nurse in charge.
• Adhere to hospital policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Maintain good communication with all staff.
• Adhere to all infection control Standards/ JCI/HIQA and international standards.
• Participate in quality initiatives within the hospital to maintain the highest standard of patient care.
