The Dean of First Year has two major areas of responsibility: the design and delivery of a comprehensive program of transitional curricula and experiences beginning with new student orientation and extending throughout students’ first year at the College, and advising new students on a variety of academic matters including Satisfactory Academic Progress, deans’ excuses where necessary and appropriate, changes of status and leaves of absence related to academic standing, and a serves as a general advisor and trusted adult as needed. Addressing the needs of first generation and first years from traditionally marginalized backgrounds is explicitly part of this charge.
Core Responsibilities
Oversees the design and delivery of a comprehensive first year experience curriculum and communication plan.
Collaborates closely with partner offices in the support of First Gen, International and first years from traditionally marginalized identities.
Collaborates regularly and closely with colleagues whose portfolios intersect with first year students’ needs, including but not limited to, the first-year seminar program, CTLR, Res Life, Compass, the Center for Health and Wellness and Care Management to ensure a seamless and supportive first-year student experience
Provides regular support and mentoring to first years’ Compass Mentors and serves as a student handbook policy matter expert to faculty teaching first year students
Oversees the Office of First Experience including supervision of the Director of First Year Experience for Orientation, theFirst Year Experience budget and first year student data metrics and evaluation
In collaboration with other student life offices, appropriately refers students to resources and other campus services
Supports students with academic challenges, including monitoring of Satisfactory Academic Progress, collaboration with faculty, incompletes, and dean’s excuses and leaves of absence.
Serves on the College’s on call after hour emergency response team.
This is a full time, benefit eligible position and the hiring range is $60,960 to $76,205.
Requirements
Position Prerequisites:
Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Higher Ed. Admin., Counseling, or other closely related field required.
At least 5 years of experience in higher education administration, or in a college student affairs environment required. Current knowledge of college student development theory and practice.
Current knowledge of and commitment to the work of creating a campus climate of diversity, equity and inclusion for all. Crisis intervention skills
Curriculum design and assessment skills
Significant Supervisory experience
Must live within, or be willing to move within, 45 minutes of campus to facilitate on call response
