Giving effect to Te Mana o te Wai requires local authorities to actively involve tangata whenua (to the extent they wish to be involved) in freshwater management. The Ministry’s role is to support regional and local government, and tangata whenua, to make the changes required to give effect to the principles of Te Mana o Te Wai in freshwater management (and wider natural resource management processes) to meet the distinct needs of their rohe/area.
