Position Purpose
To design, develop, implement, and maintain highly specialised software applications
and bioinformatics data resources to support research programs. The Bioinformatics
Developer provides critical operational direction and support for assays, by designing, analysing,
quality managing and implementing solutions for large-scale data management and
development of robust data analysis pipelines.

About the Work Area
IIID was established in 2006 as a result of a collaboration between Murdoch University and
the Department of Health Western Australia to provide care for high needs patients with
chronic diseases.
The Centre’s mission is to pursue excellence and productivity in health by undertaking world-
class clinical and research programs with the best clinicians, researchers, facilities and
services. The team works to prevent and reduce the impact of disease on people and
communities around the world, while advancing medical and scientific knowledge in global
healthcare with a focus on immunology and infectious diseases.

Key Responsibilities / Duties
1. Work with lead researchers and facility managers to maintain, develop and innovate
complex bioinformatics tools for the research programs.
2. Development of bioinformatics tools and pipelines for analysis, and annotation,
visualization and integration of genomic and other meta-data.
3. Management of computational genetics and large project-based datasets that are
driving current understanding of biology and medicine.
4. Apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse and challenging problems.
5. Integration of statistical measurements to data analysis solutions to demonstrate
study power and analysis confidence.
6. Support the facilities existing applications and code base.

Selection Criteria
Essential
1. A bachelor degree and/or a postgraduate qualification with a major in computer
science, mathematics, statistics or related discipline and at least 2 years’
experience in software development bioinformatics, or equivalent combination of
relevant experience and/or education/training.
2. Extensive experience in the strategic development of software and analysis solutions
for scientific research.
3. Demonstrated project management experience.
4. Demonstrated experience developing tools and techniques, and strong
computational/development skills, including skills in complex SQL database design
and at least one of the following: C Sharp, C#.net and integration of R stats
libraries.
5. Ability to conceptualise, develop, and implement highly-specialised visualisation
and analysis tools.
6. Understanding of statistical analysis and management of large datasets.
Desirable
1. Demonstrated understanding of life science laboratory technologies, including but not
limited to large dataset management and analysis such as 2nd and 3rd
generation nucleic acid sequencing, cellular-based assays, cellular-based
immunoassays and drug analysis technologies, HLA typing.
2. Demonstrated aptitude for mathematics as applied to life science analysis software
development and well-developed problem solving abilities.
3. Background working in a medical scientific research field.
4. Publications in relevant medical/life science or bioinformatics fields.
5. Understanding of object-oriented programming and software development life cycle.
6. Knowledge of .NET and WPF frameworks.
7. Demonstrated commitment to quality management of code and ITIL principles
Work Requirements
1. Ability to work outside of normal office hours when required.
2. Be able to provide evidence of appropriate vaccination or immunity in accordance
