The New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) is responsible for facilitating the legitimate movement of people and goods across the border, supporting trade, managing border risks and collecting customs and excise revenue on behalf of the Crown.
We have two exciting opportunities on offer for a Policy Analyst to join the International and Engagement Group within the International and Governance Group. As an analyst, you will be responsible for the engagement with countries within a specific geographic region, or international organisation. Working closely with our offshore Counsellors, you will have a particular focus on developing and maintaining relationships with key agencies in that region.
To be successful in this position you will need to demonstrate the following skills and attributes:
Experience or knowledge of international relations would be highly advantageous for this role, further, candidates from a range of varied backgrounds will also, be considered.
This role offers a great deal of variety, so you will need to be able to self-manage while being responsive to overseas counterparts and to the Customs Executive team. The team delivers at a range of levels, including providing strategic advice to inform our international engagement and supporting the coordination of international events hosted in New Zealand. This includes preparing briefs and supporting event planning and logistics. The successful candidate/s will be agile, have a strong work ethic and be able to deliver across the range of tasks undertaken by the team.
This is an opportunity to start in the International Engagement team and work in other areas of Customs.

To be eligible to apply
To join Customs in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident* and for this role, be able to obtain and maintain an Organisational Security clearance along with being able to obtain and maintain security clearance to ‘Top Secret’ level.
(*) A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last ten years, (including ten years ago from the date of this application) and resides in New Zealand at time of application;
OR
A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last ten years, (including ten years ago from the date of this application) and resides in New Zealand at time of application who has travelled out of New Zealand for short periods of time i.e. > 6 months in one of the following countries: Australia, United Kingdom, United States or Canada and can provide police certificates from those countries for the period of absence. You will also be required to pass a drug test.
You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.
