New Zealand Media & Entertainment (NZME) Looking for Multimedia Journalist at Whangarei Heads, Northland, New Zealand Full Time

We are looking for an intermediate-level journalist with flair and tenacity. It should go without saying you have a passion for news, can find great stories and the ability and drive it takes to foot it in today’s ultra-competitive multimedia media environment. Does that sound like you?

The successful applicant will be a multi-tasker, balancing priorities, projects and tasks with ease. You’re super organised and not worried by changing priorities. You are also a natural communicator, adjusting to changing environments and situations – and all with a ready smile and positive outlook.

This role would suit a qualified journalist with a few years’ experience who is skilled at creating engaging content to deadline, with a commitment to quality and accuracy.

Responsibilities

Journalism skills:

• Generate unique and compelling story ideas to create content that beats the competition and wins audiences.
• Build a network contacts and story sources, together with good local knowledge and a wide awareness of news and current topics of interest.
• Deliver complete, error-free packages; When filing for digital/print, include multiple images, video, SEO headlines, related links, social embeds, classifications, tagging and other elements as required. Capture images and video for your own reports when needed and save images into archive systems as instructed.
• Deliver voice reports or live Q&A sessions from news scenes for radio if required.
• Ensure premium content is thoroughly planned and well-executed.
• Help promote NZME’s web and social presence, e.g. provide live social coverage during breaking news events and amplify your own and colleagues’ stories over social channels.

Planning And Organisational Skills

• Work quickly and efficiently, managing time and prioritising to meet all deadlines.
• Operate with an NZME-wide mentality, fostering strong communication between the group’s newsrooms.
• When required help to curate/edit our websites and social media accounts.
• Pitch content to nzherald.co.nz social and homepage channels.

Audience-focus

• Think audience-first, using analytics and research data to understand and respond to what audiences want.

Technical Skills

• Master all necessary equipment and production systems for your role.
• With training and support, learn and adapt to new media techniques across multiple platforms – e.g. print, digital, social, radio, video.

Skills And Experience Needed

• You’ll have a relevant qualification and at least 2 years’ experience in a journalism role.
• You’ll be comfortable in print / digital / broadcasting environments.
• You’ll be an effective communicator, relating confidently to internal and external stakeholders.
• Contribute positively across the Whangarei newsroom and wider newsrooms across NZME.
• Be adaptable in dealing with change.
