Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) supports the University and Division by providing an array of preventative educational, physical and mental health services. Inclusive and student centered in our approach, SHCS adapts to the changing needs of the campus community through innovation, technology and excellence. Student Health and Counseling Services is responsible for providing primary health care to the student campus community in a professional, competent caring, and confidential manner. SHCS is committed to: providing reasonably comprehensive ambulatory medical services to all eligible students; promoting disease prevention through health education; providing non-classroom health education on issues that impact the student both physically and psychologically; provide counseling services with referrals to other psychological professionals when necessary; provide ancillary support services (i.e. laboratory, pharmacy, and administrative); providing advisory, collaborative, and educational assistance to other university departments; and ensuring staff competency to support and fulfill this mission.
The goals are to maintain quality of care, client satisfaction, affordability, accessibility, and suitability for operational effectiveness.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position will provide patient care to the students of NCCU. This involves working in collaboration with other nurses, medical providers and other support staff to provide professional, competent, caring and safe services to the students. The Nurse will strive to meet the patient’s needs including: relief from discomfort, emotional care, administration of medications, fluid therapy, and patient education. The staff nurse assesses the patient, plans nursing care, and implements the nursing plan through the use of the nursing process under the supervision of the nurse supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
A working knowledge of the application of nursing theory, techniques, practices and principles of nursing; considerable knowledge of behavioral concepts and treatment; knowledge of nursing philosophy; general knowledge of agency services, policies and procedures, and general knowledge of pharmacotherapy with skill in the preparation and administration of medication as ordered.
Ability to make physical and psycho-social nursing assessment; ability to effectively express one’s self in oral and written form; ability to understand and implement oral and written instructions; maintain nursing records; ability to gain the confidence of patients and work effectively with them; establish and maintain effective working relations with the health care staff; and ability to supervise and organize the work of less skilled health care workers.
Position must have ability to: document relevant information related to patient’s complaint (i.e.: vital signs, chief complaint and pertinent related history for appropriate evaluation; make clinical assessment and observation along with documentation pertinent to patient’s condition and response to medication and treatment; assist providers with exams, procedures and treatments as needed to render care; perform therapeutic treatments as ordered per Physician/Practitioner, Physician Assistant or Physician’s standing orders; administer medication ordered by Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant accurately and safely, documenting time, route and date; manage storing and handling of vaccines, allergy meds and other medications; administer intravenous fluids or medication; provide follow-up instructions and counseling to students regarding medications, treatment and health prevention concepts; and, perform some laboratory procedures in the absence of the Medical Technologist.
Minimum Education/Experience
Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolin by the NC Board of Nursing.
