This position is required to participate in on-call and call back duties, which can include days, nights and weekends.
Travel between campus locations is a regular part of the position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive, on university business to pass an online defensive driving course and submit their driver’s license number for periodic records review. The law affects all faculty, staff and students who drive any university-owned motorized vehicles. Job Description
Northern Arizona University’s Utilities and Plant Operations is currently hiring one (1) Stationary Engineer, Senior .
Under the general direction of the Central Plant Supervisor and Stationary Engineer, Lead for Facility Services, the Stationary Engineer Sr. works within the Central Heating and Cooling Plants. They operate and maintain Central plant and distribution equipment including high pressure power boilers up to 243,000 lbs/hr steam capacity and 96 MMBtu HTHW capacity, centrifugal chillers up to 4500 tons, and auxiliary components. This position exists to aid and assist Facility Services’ mission to the University by providing distributed energy to the Campus community, exercising fiscal responsibility, reporting on leading edge technology, practicing sustainable maintenance and operations.
This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all central plant equipment including boilers, chillers and associated equipment in accordance with American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Arizona Department of Occupational Safety (ADOSH) codes and standards to ensure a working, living and learning environment is maintained. Maintain NAU’s district energy system of approximately 7 miles of tunnels and direct buried pipe systems to deliver steam, high temp hot water and chilled water to campus buildings. Operates valves, controls and other central plant equipment to control the flow of air, gas, water and steam while maintaining temperatures and pressures at designated levels in accordance with the American Boiler Manufacturers Association (ABMA) instructions, chiller manufacturer instructions, and University standards. Replaces minor piping and control components associated with the plant production and distribution systems. This position is autonomous in nature which requires the operator to rely heavily on their own experience and knowledge.
Plant Operations – 40%
Gathers and analyzes basic information related to university plant operations to be used for recommendations.
Assists in central plant services to ensure campus facilities are properly serviced.
Assists with inspections, trap surveys and repairs in underground utility tunnel components which require kneeling, crawling, and climbing in tight quarters and in extreme heat conditions.
Monitors various gauges, gas, and draft meters, pressure, and temperature indicators to verify operating conditions of automatically fired boilers, chillers, compressors, motors, turbines and/or related equipment and adjusts controls to specified operating conditions.
Samples, tests, analyze, mixes and inject chemicals to maintain boiler/chiller waterside conditions and blow downs in accordance with engineering standards set by chemical engineering representative.
Uses test equipment such as volt/ohmmeter, combustion analyzer, combustible gas detector, and air quality analyzers to ensure compatibility and safe and efficient operation of equipment.
Assists with periodic system testing, and reports equipment which fails to meet acceptable operating standards
Operates data center and computers to question and verify specific operating conditions of various plant equipment and initiates corrective actions when required.
Records plant operating conditions, demands, and utility usage on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis and prepare reports for analysis and historical record keeping.
Always applies safety standards and maintains good housekeeping practices to provide safe working conditions; reports problems affecting plant safety.
Equipment Maintenence, Repair, and Documentation – 35%
Determines need for and performs routine maintenance and overhaul of boilers including complete tear down and rebuild of burners, flame management system and drum level control system along with all auxiliary equipment. Cleans and rattles boiler tubes as needed.
Writes basic reports and communications to provide information on necessary adjustments to campus utility systems
Organizes appropriate documentation to ensure compliance with university policies.
Prepares boiler for annual internal and external inspections which requires extended periods of time spent inside the boiler steam drum and combustion chamber.
Operates boilers outside of normal operating range to prove that all boilers safeties are in working order and corrects any discrepancies found.
Performs routine maintenance and repair of centrifugal type chillers including partial tear down of condenser and evaporator shells.
Trouble shooting of chiller controls, refrigerant circuit, and lubrication system. Cleans chiller tubes on an annual basis or as required.
Maintenance of cooling towers to include the replacement of tower fill, belts, motors, and inlet screens.
Inspect and overhaul of plate and frame heat exchangers to include cleaning of plates on an annual basis and plate replacement when required.
Monitor and repair of compressed air system to include complete tear down and rebuild of compressors and all distribution system piping, valves, driers, separators, and controls.
Repair, replace and conduct new installation of multiple types of valves and gaskets to include gate, butterfly, globe, pneumatic, pressure reducing valve and needle valves.
Troubleshoot and repair of plant automation system to include transmitter calibration and replacement, programming and calibration of controllers, and repair/replacement of controllers down to the component level.
Measures, cuts, and prepares pipes, tubes, and fittings for assembly.
Tracks and reports on inventory of materials and supplies.
Assemble and secure pipes, tubes, fittings, and related equipment, according to specifications, by cementing, soldering, and threading joints.
Training and Oversight – 10%
Acts in a lead capacity when required which may include the supervision and training of stationary engineers, intermediates, and helpers.
Assists in development of workplace processes and procedures.
Dedication to the development of sustainable operations and maintenance practices.
Adheres to new work methods or procedures, changes in safety regulations and work policies.
Oversight of shift Stationary Engineers and Student Stationary Engineers.
Coordinating and Communicating – 10%
Receives and responds to plant maintenance requests from campus members regarding NAU facilities.
Take a proactive role in promoting and supporting Facility Services mission and vision.
Knowledge and skills of industry best practices.
Actively maintain cutting edge knowledge of industry practices pertaining to higher education and continually suggest process improvements based on industry changes.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a four year federally approved technical training stationary engineer program.
3-5 years of relevant experience.
Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
Associates or bachelor’s degree in related field
Four years of experience in the operation of power boilers or high temperature boilers and related Stationary Engineer License
Six years of experience in the operation of chiller equipment and related systems which includes two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of boilers and related systems.
Knowledge and experience with programming building automation systems and processes.
Knowledge and experience with chemical systems associated with production and distribution.
Chlorofluorocarbons Certification
May require Arizona driver’s license upon employment.
Experience with work order and maintenance electronic tracking systems.

Salary
Salary range begins at $54,779 – $68,474. Annual salary commensurate with candidate’s qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status
This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.
