Summary:
The Executive Director, Portfolio and Governance Management will have accountability to establish best practices and tools for key processes such as portfolio planning and on time execution, timely and decision making, transparent 360 degree communication, and optimal management of key program risks. She/he will be responsible for synthesizing activities across the portfolio to drive consistent tools and processes, maintaining and optimizing over time. The candidate will lead a team to work with our Program Managers to develop tools and processes to gather program data to support portfolio views and develop data visualizations, performance measures, analytics and to generate evidence and business insights enabling optimal decision-making, operational efficiency, progress tracking, and targeted communications to stakeholders.
She/he will drive portfolio-level activities, including management of product and portfolio governance reviews, decision making, and setting and reporting of goals/milestones. The Executive Director and PPM will work in close partnership with the Clinical Development, Research, Commercial, Finance, and Technical Operations team representatives to define, develop and execute against an integrated project plan for timely delivery to the scope of work within the agreed to budget.
The candidate will facilitate and manage the Research and Development Committee governance body through strong meeting management practices and be responsible to ensure that the meeting drives the right discussion and oversight across the portfolio to discuss issues, risks, approvals, etc.
Primary Responsibilities:
Lead informed decision-making through disciplined prioritization, data analytics, and real-time reporting to synthesize and integrate the enterprise portfolio to deliver on portfolio objectives through best-in-class standards across program operations to roll into portfolio views and tracking.
Partner with functional leaders to drive teams to effective governance decisions within the company’s operating model, and proactively identify and escalate risks, gaps, and challenges; works productively and collaboratively with teams to develop scenarios and solve problems
Build relationships and collaborate with Program Management and Portfolio and Governance, program leaders, and functional leaders across the organization to define and implement enhancements to governance and proactively identify and escalate risks, gaps, and challenges.
Develop communication tools and dashboards to enable audiences to understand timelines, milestones, risks, and progress across the portfolio.
Provide quantitative valuations for prospective product opportunities and standard portfolio metrics/analyses at key meetings to ensure data-driven decision-making.
Coach and manage a team of portfolio operations leads.
Combines attention to detail with a big-picture strategic perspective
Act as a point of escalation for early pipeline issues and risks.
Accountable for accurate forecasting, tracking and adherence to program budgets (headcount and external costs) by liaising with team members; responsible for challenging and reconciling assumptions, timelines, and expenses on program level.
Manages project variance and root cause analysis, and develops risk mitigation/issue management plans with the objective to meet the financial targets.
Ensures program team operational excellence in terms of meeting conduct, decision making, risk assessment and management, and lessons-learned processes with a commitment to continuous improvement.
Education Minimum Requirements:
Required Experience and Skills:
BS in a scientific discipline
PMP or advanced project management training/certificate
15+ years in the life-sciences, pharmaceutical industry, with at least 10 years experience in program and portfolio leadership and management including integrated timeline management in the context of pharmaceutical product development
Demonstrated deep knowledge and expertise in program management
Adaptive leadership style, and ability to guide and influence multidisciplinary teams without formal authority
Experience managing program leads and/or managers and leading high-functioning cross-functional teams
Previous people management experience required along with a passion for employee development
Highly collaborative orientation with outstanding communication and relationship management skills, and high EQ
Strong interpersonal and communication skills for bridging scientific and business constituents, negotiating timelines, and effective collaboration
Significant breadth of experience across drug development including non-clinical, clinical, regulatory, CMC, and commercial functions
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Strong communications and visualization skills to help deliver complex information into consistent views
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Advanced degree (e.g., MS, MBA, PhD, PharmD) strongly preferred.
Experience leading the work of outsourced partners strongly preferred.
