Duties
As the Fire Crew Leader at Pukaskwa National Park, your primary responsibilities are to supervise the fire crew members and deliver wildland fuel management, prescribed fire and wildfire suppression services in support of field units’ fire management programs. As a part of the Resource Conservation and Pukaskwa National Park Team, you will assist in a variety of projects on natural and cultural resources management, vegetation management, incident response and management including compliance. The job can be physically demanding, requiring that you work in remote locations of the park, under adverse weather conditions with limited means of communications.

Intent of the process
This is an anticipatory staffing process. Results may be used in the future to fill permanent or temporary vacancies that may arise at the Fire Crew Leader position (GT 03) at Pukaskwa National Park and other locations, for various tenures, such as: Seasonal Indeterminate, Term, Acting Assignment or Assignment at level, depending on status of the selected candidate.

Education:
- A secondary school diploma AND Crew Leader Training (Parks Canada Intermediate Wildland fire Management Course and/or an equivalent Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre certification).
Degree equivalency
Experience:
- Experience in fire management operations related to fuel management, prescribed fire and/or fire suppression;
- Experience in using and maintaining fire equipment;
- Experience of working in remote areas for extended periods;
- Experience in supervision.

Knowledge:
- Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other related Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) issues;
- Knowledge of fire management strategies and tactics for both wildland and prescribed fires;
- Knowledge of key techniques and practices related to weather prediction, map and photo interpretation and fire behaviour prediction.
Abilities:
- Ability to deliver training to fire crew members;
- Ability to supervise staff while working under high stress;
- Ability to use a computer for recording and reporting incidents and/or accidents.

Additional Education: Minimum completion of two years of a post-secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology, forestry)
Degree equivalency
Operational Requirements:
- Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
- Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
- Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required;
- Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required;
- Willingness to complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course;
Conditions of employment
- Obtain and maintain Reliability Security status;
- Maintenance of a valid Class5 Driver’s License (Class L,N or other graduated license will not be accepted);
- Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks, including:
- Occupational Health Assessment for firefighters;
• Meet and maintain certified status for the Canadian Physical Performance Exchange Standard for Type 1 • Wildland Fire Fighters(WFX-FIT) in accordance with Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) Requirements;
- Successful completion of ICS100/200 or higher level of incident management training (organized by the park);
- Successful completion of Standard First Aid-CPR or higher level (organized by the park);
- Successful completion of Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (organized by the park);
- Meet and maintain certification for chain saw use;
- Meet and maintain certified status for hover exit for light and intermediate helicopters;
- Meet and maintain certified status for Class D Heli-sling for light and intermediate helicopters.
