WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?

You will:

• under the direction of the Supervisor, Programs, act as a secondary training officer for an assigned sub-unit within the Fort Henry Guard, ensuring proper instruction and monitoring of Fort staff in 19th century British military drills and/or modern interpretive skills and techniques
• interpret, in period costume, the role of a Colour Serjeant in the British Army in Canada c. 1867
• assist supervisors and group leaders as a secondary resource in the planning and implementation of entire parade sequences and daily scheduling of program staff
• interpret, to the public, the social and military history of Fort Henry and the Kingston area in the 1860s
• make each visitor’s experience at Fort Henry interesting and enjoyable by providing excellent customer service
• embody the SLPC’s equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests.

HOW DO I QUALIFY?

MANDATORY:

• Demonstrated ability to act in specialized artillery positions
• Understanding of and ability to meet the safety, care and handling standards and use of black powder and weapons that fire black powder
• Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position
• Conditional upon successful candidate being granted required security clearance for this position (Vulnerable Sector check)

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

• You have knowledge and understanding of Fort Henry’s Commemorative Integrity Statement.
• You have knowledge of tourism and its economic impact.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH SKILLS:

• You have the ability to learn large volumes of historical information and specialized vocabulary and impart this information to the public.
• You have advanced teaching and leadership skills to teach British military drill c. 1867 and perform as Colour Serjeant in charge of a specific sub-unit (the Infantry Detachment) of the Fort Henry Guard on parade to the public.

CUSTOMER SERVICE, COMMUNICATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS:

• You have advanced communication skills to address and instruct both individuals and groups and communicate policies and guidelines to staff.
• You possess organizational skills to assist supervisors with a variety of tasks including planning and implementation of parade sequences, daily scheduling and preparing reports.
• You have a personal commitment to health and safety, workplace discrimination, harassment and violence prevention, and excellence in customer service.
