General Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director of Emergency Services with direct leadership oversight by the Shift Manager, the Registered Nurse (RN) adheres to the Missouri RN Practice Act and the ANA Code of Ethics to provide direct and indirect patient care activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provides and coordinates care with Emergency Services patients and their family/support persons.
Performs all aspects of patient care activities to improve quality outcomes, enhance patient safety, and to provide accurate information to healthcare team members and the patient and their family thus supporting the Mission and Vision of Phelps Health. Patient care activities are conducted in accordance with standards identified in facility policy and procedures and consistent with applicable licensing/governing authorities.
Performs initial focused assessments independently and utilizes critical thinking to implement emergent therapeutic interventions through communication with a provider or through application of Emergency Standardized Procedures.
Performs ongoing and timely assessments to obtain nursing database information (also includes medical and surgical history, allergies, medication reconciliation), to identify changes in patient status, to evaluate responses to interventions, and to support a safe and secure care environment.
Communicates effectively with patients, their family/support persons and staff in a manner that reduces barriers, overcomes conflicts through use of de-escalation techniques, and results in timely sharing of pertinent patient information among healthcare team members. Demonstrates use of Phelps Health Standards of Behaviors (outlined below). Uses effective communication strategies to achieve delegated performance outcomes.
Provides evidence-based education to the patient and the public to enhance their management of health conditions and medical risk factors and which support health care outcomes.
Demonstrates clinical competency and professional expertise through participation in ongoing education (internally through facility and departmental education, competency testing, and council participation; and externally through professional organizations).
Documents all pertinent and relevant information into the patient’s electronic health record in a timely and professional manner. Documents supportive information to ensure responsible stewardship of Phelps Health goals and visions (also includes Core Measures, regulatory and facility/department data collections).
Maintains professional licensure, facility and departmental required education and certifications. Utilizes those standards to guide care provision (also includes infection prevention, safe patient handling and lifting, critical test results, medication administration/scanning).
Job Qualifications
Education
Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preferred; Associate of Science degree in Nursing accepted.
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required.
Work Experience
Solid critical care training with minimum 2 years nursing experience desired. New graduates or less experienced nurses will be considered.
Certification/License
Current RN license in the State of Missouri or Compact State.
American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
Emergency Nursing Association Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) required or completed within one year.
American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required or completed within one year.
Emergency Nursing Association Pediatric Course (ENPC) preferred.
Mental/Physical Requirements
Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 pounds, turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Intermittent frequent standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching. Accuracy, thoroughness, and attention to detail required.
Working Conditions
Intermittent predictable risk of exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons. Frequent exposure to infectious or communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Occasional exposure to radiation. Intermittent predictable risk of exposure to anti-neoplastic agents. Frequently works with sharps and other potentially bio-hazardous materials.
