Prison Journalism Project Hiring for Administrative Assistant Job at Remote Full Time

Prison Journalism Project, which trains incarcerated writers to be journalists and publishes their stories, is looking for an administrative assistant to perform data input and other logistical, operational and administrative duties. The ideal candidate will have excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, proficiency with computers and past experience in performing administrative tasks. They must show initiative, be a problem solver and enjoy working as part of an engaging and collaborative virtual team.

PJP is a fast-growing, independent, non-partisan, non-profit startup initiative that aims to develop the first national network of prison journalists. We believe that the deep reforms that are necessary to fix the U.S. criminal justice system can only happen through informed, bipartisan public discourse about mass incarceration. Incarcerated people, who are talked about but are rarely heard from, must be a part of this conversation.

The position is a three-month initial contract for 10-15 hours per week for $15 per hour with the possibility of more hours as well as a more permanent role. While the position is remote, a candidate based in Chicago would be preferred. We welcome applicants who are impacted by incarceration.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Adding and updating information about our writers, volunteers, donors and other constituents on our Hubspot database.
• Tracking of writer payments, permissions and acknowledgments.
• Adding emails to our newsletter subscribers list.
• Tracking donations for fundraising campaigns.
• Tracking PJP J-school assignments from students.
• Processing instructional handouts and sending them out to students.
• Checking our prison mail accounts on JPay, CorrLinks and others.
• Other administrative duties as necessary.
• (If in Chicago) checking our business postal box and scanning mail weekly.
• Work collaboratively with the rest of the PJP team.

• A self-starter who takes ownership and initiative while also being a team player that is willing to give and receive constructive criticism.
• Proficiency with computers.
• Prior experience in performing administrative tasks.
• Familiarity with journalism is a plus, but not required.
• You must own your own computer.
• Familiarity with JPay, CorrLinks and GTL is desirable, but not required.
