GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs food service related activities to ensure patient satisfaction. Ensures food service sanitation and Quality Control standards are met. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Delivers patient meal trays, continental breakfast, between meal snacks, and nourishments. Uses scripts, age appropriate guidelines, and patient identification procedures when passing trays and nourishments; Follows infection control and food safety guidelines; Collects trays after meal service.
2. Ensures patients with prescribed diets receive meal trays on units assigned.
3. Delivers and collects patient selective menus; assists patients with menu selection as appropriate.
4. Prepares food for, assembles, and serves patient trays.
5. Reports patient food preferences, patient requests, unusual intake and comments to the clinical nutrition staff.
6. Maintains and improves patient satisfaction scores on unit assigned.
7. Cleans and sanitizes nourishment centers and soiled tray carts, ensures all equipment is in working order; reports equipment problems to supervisors; records designated refrigerator temperatures daily, as appropriate.
8. Requisitions, delivers, stores, and tallies floor stock and nourishments. Records amount of par stock delivered to each patient care unit; Ensures food on par stock cart remains in the temperature safety zone; Ensures all food is labeled and dated in the nourishment galley.
9. Clears over bed tables for patients and prepares beverages prior to each meal.
10. Uses hospital computer and communication systems for patient meal service.
11. Turns on and uses equipment; Prepares food items requiring little technical knowledge; Portions, and serves food for patients/ patient families, external retail customers, hospital employees and catering customers in assigned unit. (Patient Services/Central Kitchen, Cafeteria, catering, department operated kiosks).
12. Gathers, distributes, and unloads needed supplies and equipment to complete tasks and maintains inventories of these supplies as part of daily work assignment.
13. Sets up, supplies, and dismantles serving stations and organizes food supplies, dishes, utensils, and disposables according to department procedures (Retail serving lines and Central Kitchen patient tray line).
14. Handles food safely following department and healthcare regulatory agency guidelines and standards for the preparation, heating/cooling, labeling, and safe storage of food products.
15. Takes and records temperatures according to directions in order to maintain safe food holding and storage temperatures.
16. Cleans, arranges, and sanitizes work, service, and dining areas and cleans equipment frequently using approved chemicals as established by the department and healthcare regulatory agencies.
17. Fills ice containers, maintains required sanitation of ice machine, scoops and buckets.
18. Performs ware washing activities including soak sink procedures, cart unloading, scrap line operation, pot and pan cleaning, dish machine operation, dish room cleaning, and cart washing.
19. Pulls and hauls, dirty and clean trays, dishes, silver, pots, pans, racks, carts, equipment, etc. between work areas and dish room; stores as assigned.
20. Disposes of waste and garbage in proper manner to assigned destination and cleans the area equipment involved.
21. Cleans, as assigned, all spills, surfaces, work areas, and washrooms in kitchen, cafeteria, mechanical area, and/or all carts and equipment. Moves equipment as needed to permit access to walls/floors. Steams all portable equipment. Removes string from wheels. Maintains acceptable sanitary standards at all times.
22. Keeps all drains and floors clean, swept, vacuumed, and/or scrubbed as appropriate, including refrigerators, storage areas, production, dish room, service areas, offices, etc.; runs scrubber as assigned.
23. Helps receive, date, and put away deliveries; stores in proper refrigerators, freezers, or storeroom; rotates stock; cleans shelves, removes pallets.
24. Puts away all produce, equipment and supplies after end of meal or at end of day; labels as appropriate.
25. Assists in training personnel as assigned.
26. Follows hospital and department policies and procedures.
27. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Food Handler Card required within 30 days of hire.
Foodservice and customer service experience preferred
Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in English and demonstrate reading ability.

Able to communicate with patients and staff using a variety of audio-technology
