Shipt Looking for Software Engineer – Gateway at Greater Birmingham, Alabama Area Full Time

Shipt’s Gateway team provides API gateway services for internal engineering teams and external partners. We are looking for an engineer to focus on automating and scaling Shipt’s API gateway, service mesh, and content delivery network (CDN) using Golang services in a cloud-based Kubernetes environment. This role requires experience writing, deploying, and supporting production APIs (preferably in Go). You’ll need familiarity with container-based infrastructure (like Kubernetes) and modern observability tools. Solid communication skills are also a must as you’ll be working with many teams across Shipt as we build and support the gateway.

Your Responsibilities

• Contribute to the design and implementation of the Shipt API gateway.
• Write Go-based services to expose/enable key gateway features.
• Write production apps that are thoroughly tested and implement observability best practices (logs, metrics, alerts, traces, dashboards).
• Work with partner teams to integrate Gateway components with the rest of Shipt’s cloud infrastructure.
• Write clear documentation to help other teams onboard their APIs to the Gateway.
• Demonstrate and advocate for Shipt’s values (Drive, Rally, Positivity, Authenticity, Caring) as we build out the team.

Requirements

• 2+ years of experience as a software engineer writing production applications in Go, Java, Kotlin, Rust, or other modern languages
• Experience writing unit and integration tests and a solid understanding of testing principles
• Experience deploying apps on cloud-based environments
• Experience with cloud-native observability tools (e.g. Influx, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack, OpenTelemetry, APM tools)
• Bachelor’s degree with programming coursework or equivalent experience

Nice to Haves

Experience in one or more of the following areas would also be useful (but not necessary) in this role:

• Experience deploying applications in a Service Mesh environment such as Istio
• Content Delivery Network (CDN) configuration (e.g. Cloudflare, Fastly)
• Experience managing Infrastructure as Code with tools like Terraform or Pulumi

Work Arrangement

Shipt considers candidates located near a Shipt office or workspace in Birmingham, San Francisco, or Minneapolis to be hybrid, which means that they have the flexibility to work from home (with leader approval) or at a Shipt office in order to facilitate the ability to innovate, collaborate, and spark team connections.
