Why Work for us: Employee benefits (southampton.gov.uk)
A fantastic and exciting opportunity has arisen to work in a busy and thriving Youth Justice Service to shape and develop a brand-new role developing and leading on positive educational, training and employment outcomes for children in the justice system. This is a leadership role focused on bringing their own expertise in house to drive and change outcomes for children in the justice system.
This role is embedded into a multidisciplinary team and the post holder will work in the youth justice team and will work with police, probation, social care, CAMHS, schools, education and training providers, educational psychologists and speech and language therapists. They will represent the service at multi agency meetings and will drive the aim of improving education outcomes for this group of children. It would also require an ability to manage and supervise staff overseeing other aspects of work that support the overall goals of the role.
Southampton Youth Justice Service has established links with education across the department where the successful candidate will also have links for their own professional development, as well as comprehensive induction, training and support mechanisms within the service itself.
We are looking for a person who has qualified teaching experience, that knows and understands the education system, as well as someone who has experience of working with children with a range of challenges. That person would be passionate, trauma informed and determined to get the right and best outcome for disadvantaged children. The picture for children in youth justice and education nationally is a difficult one with many children persistently absent, or refusing to attend education provision, or waiting for placements or deemed too high risk to have on site. That picture has declined since COVID. We know the link between not attending or engaging in education, training or employment and offending and exploitation is clear. In the Youth Justice cohort there are high proportions of children with significant speech and language needs, special education needs, neuro diversity which can create barriers for engagement. We want to shift that, have aspiration for our children, support a change in identity as well as expand life choices with the aim of reducing the risk of offending. If you feel you have the skills and experience to take on this challenge, please contact Anna Harbridge for a discussion about the role.
