Applications are invited for senior clinical fellows within the Medical Care Group at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals. The posts will be based across in General Internal Medicine (GIM) for a period of 12 months.
This post offers wide experience in medicine including managing patients on the acute unselected take for those wishing to gain further invaluable experience in a busy but stimulating clinical environment in a large district general hospital with excellent opportunities.
You will need to be fully registered with the GMC and have eligible Right to work status at the time of application.
Working within a supportive and educationally focussed environment, the post holder will provide registrar level experience. The role would particularly suit doctors who have completed CMT/IMT training and individuals with equivalent experience who are looking to progress to specialty training and also for those looking to go down the non-consultant career grade or SAS route.
The clinical fellow will be an integral part of the junior medical workforce involved in the clerking and management of patients on the acute take alongside responsibilities on the base ward. This post is for 12 months and will provide excellent training.
The successful candidate(s) will undertake the following roles:
Clinical reviews and participation in daily ward rounds on the base ward
Attending outpatient clinics within GIM or a sub specialty
Participation in the acute medical take including out of hours and weekend
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in quality improvement projects, education and audit.
The post-holder will be allowed study leave.
A £338 million (PFI) investment has re-built and modernised both Whiston and St Helens Hospitals, resulting in modern state of the art health care facilities for the treatment and care of patients. St Helens Hospital was completed in 2008 and Whiston Hospital in 2010. The hospitals include 887 inpatient beds with state of the art CT and MRI facilities existing on both hospital sites. CT and MRI scanners at St Helens have also recently been upgraded including installation of a high field 3 Tesla MRI scanner. The DEXA scanner is also located at St Helens Hospital.
The Trust provides a full range of acute inpatient, outpatient, day case and emergency services to local communities of St Helens, Knowsley, parts of Halton and Liverpool. The Regional Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit also extends its services to the whole of Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and the Isle of Man.

Participate in the initial assessment and management of patients, supervising more junior members of the team.
To lead inpatient ward rounds to ensure the on-going clinical management of patients is appropriate. To support the discharge of patients, to a place of safety, in a timely manner.
Participate in or lead the acute take, to provide senior clinical decisions, with the support of consultant clinicians.
Contribute to the Medical Emergency Team (MET). Lead cardiac arrest calls.
Contribute to GIM/medical speciality clinics.
Liaise with other members of the clinical team and other specialties.
Advise junior trainees and ANPs about management of patients.
Develop skills in managing the ward to avoid unnecessary patient delays and maintain good clinical care to all patients.
