This position shall be filled in accordance with the provisions of the OCSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement. ODA bargaining unit members have selection rights before non-bargaining unit members. The Ohio Department of Agriculture is currently seeking candidates for a Researcher 3 position in the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory’s Virology Section. The duties for the Researcher 3 position include but are not limited to:
Conducts and coordinates research efforts & projects with other Animal Health lab sections, outside agencies &/or consultants (e.g. universities, industries such as swine (National Pork Board), poultry (Ohio Poultry Association), cattle (bull stud)
Plans, coordinates, reviews & analyzes research programs & projects (e.g., FDA, USDA and other federal or state funded programs & project)
Reviews & analyzes problems or issues to be researched & develops appropriate research tools (e.g. methodology, design of experiments, hypotheses testing, publications)
Designs & implements research projects & prepares & maintains necessary reports, records &/or technical evaluations related to research projects
Assists in preparing research proposals
Acts as lead worker of lower- level laboratory staff (e.g., scientists/technicians) assigned to research projects and veterinary diagnostic work
Serves as resource person & technical advisor in laboratory
Assists with virology laboratory Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC)
Assists with development of new research methodologies
Assists supervisor in training lower-level scientists & technicians
Provides technical expertise & acts as back-up person to perform various assays in Virology Section
Assists other sections in planning & executing special projects as needed
Reads highly technical journals
Attends & participates in local &/or out-of-state training sessions & seminars
Replies to requests for information &/or represents agency in meetings with government or industry representatives &/or public
Testifies in hearings
Qualifications
Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be set at the lowest rate of the salary range. In most cases successful employees will move up a step in the salary range within six months, with subsequent step increases occurring every year with successful performance.

24 months training or 24 months experience in planning & conducting research studies using operational, mathematical, analytical &/or statistical research techniques & preparing reports, records &/or technical evaluations related to research conducted
OR
12 months experience as Researcher 2, 66922
OR
Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above
Knowledge of supervisory principles/techniques*; employee training & development*; operational, mathematical, analytical &/or statistical methods used in problem solving or decision making. Skill in use of personal computer or video display terminal. Ability to deal with large number of variables & determine specific course of action; establish friendly atmosphere as lead worker; develop research tools & design projects; prepare meaningful, concise & accurate reports.
