Job Title: Statewide Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Program Specialist

Job Description:
The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is seeking a highly motivated and skilled candidate to fill the role as Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Specialist for the Statewide Fire Program. This position reports directly to the Statewide Wildfire Risk Reduction Coordinator and is responsible for multiple duties and levels of program management regarding preparedness, education and mitigation of wildfire risk throughout the state. Principal Duties:

• Develop and implement an effective wildfire preparedness, outreach and education program.
• Promote national wildfire preparedness programs.
• Assist in the solicitation, writing, reviewing, editing and scoring of competitive grants.
• Assist in project tracking, implementation, monitoring and reporting.
• Provide assistance to the 6 area office WUI Coordinators.
• Create and distribute innovative education materials and attend preparedness events across the state.
• Support the State Fire Program by attending meetings, providing updates and feedback, and engaging in wildland fire activities when needed.

Ideal Candidate:

• The ability to work independently with minimal supervision. This position will likely be in a remote working environment. Must be self motivated and be able to provide time sensitive deliverables.
• Well developed oral communication skills – Expected to prepare and give presentations to communities and stakeholders in a convincing and friendly manner.
• Well developed written communication skills – Pays a high attention to detail and has experience writing or reviewing grants, planning documents, prescribed fire plans or other technical writing.
• Flexibility in a complex working environment. Able to prioritize and work on a variety of projects simultaneously.
• Experience with national preparedness programs such as the Fire Adapted Communities Learning Network, Firewise USA and Ready, Set, Go!
• An understanding of wildland fire ecology, risk management and community planning. • Knowledge of state purchasing policies and procedures.
• A current NWCG wildland redcard with a minimum of FFT1 and ICT5 qualifications; at least 5 years working in wildland fire.
• Knowledge and skills with standard computer software use and troubleshooting including ESRI ArcGIS online applications.

Minimum Requirements:

• Successful candidate will possess a High School Diploma.
• Current FFT2 NWCG qualifications or a minimum of 2 years of experience in wildland fire.

Preferred Requirements:

• Grant writing experience.
• Bacholor’s degree in Natural Resources or related field.
• Current FFT1 and ICT5 NWCG qualifications or a minimum of 5 years of experience in wildland fire.
• Remote work with expected results.

• Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, working in remote wilderness areas and/or boating/OHV areas, etc.
• Wildland fire qualifications and agency certification standards.
• Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities and recurring lifting.
• Some travel required. Must be able to pass the light work capacity test (walk one mile in 15 minutes) due to field work that may be required on active incidents.
