We are seeking a Field Officer to join our team!

This is an exciting opportunity to join our field work team at Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke Inc. Reporting to the Team Taiao Leader, you’ll have a unique opportunity to enhance the biodiversity within Whakaraupō (Lyttleton Harbour) and monitor conservation outcomes associated with Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke’s goals and aspirations, enriching the lives of current and future generations of Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke Whānui. The ideal candidate will be reliable and have experience working outdoors in rugged terrain and in seasonal weather conditions. This role will suit a self-motivated person with a strong work ethic and an understanding of Te Ao Māori.

He Kōrero Mōu – About You

• Current full Motor vehicle driver’s licence (desirable)
• Passionate about conservation
• Can demonstrate safe operation of equipment
• Previous experience with conservation work
• Current First Aid Certificate (desirable)
• Growsafe Basic Certificate (desirable)
• Willingness to learn about Mātauranga Māori and kaitiakitanga
• Proven ability to work cooperatively as part of a team
• An openness to embrace the values and aspirations of Ngāi Tahu whānui and interest to grow your cultural understanding in te ao Māori

Mō Mātou – About Us

Ngāti Wheke are the hapū that hold mana whenua and mana moana over Whakaraupō and the surrounding area. The takiwā of Ngāti Wheke reflects the events and deeds of Te Rakiwhakaputa (a Ngāi Tahu rangatira of Ngāti Kurī descent) and his sons, Manuwhiri and Wheke, who secured their descendants mana whenua rights to the area. Ngāti Wheke acknowledge Ngāti Māmoe and Waitaha whakapapa lines as well as Ngāi Tahu, due to the intermarriages between Waitaha and Māmoe who inhabited Whakaraupō upon the arrival of Te Rakiwhakaputa.

Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke Inc (THoNW; the Rūnanga) is the modern-day representative structure of Ngāti Wheke and represents upwards of 8,000 whānau members. The Rūnanga is one of the 18 Papatipu Rūnanga that make up Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, the iwi authority representing Ngāi Tahu whānui.
