Summary of Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and adaptable candidate for this new post, which builds on the work we have done to update our teaching processes and practices in an increasingly digital world.

The Institute of Cancer Research (the ICR) provides both taught courses and research degrees—the Education teams in Academic Services work to support these. The Education Projects Officer will contribute to this goal in two main ways, by:

• managing the digital learning platforms and services that directly underpin our teaching, and are increasingly vital in the hybrid, post-pandemic education landscape; and
  
• providing support for design and data-focused projects, which improve the quality of the teaching we provide, or the efficiency of our operations.

The post-holder should have excellent general office IT skills, and the ability to ‘pick up and run’ with new systems, platforms, and processes. The post-holder will become our in-house expert on a wide range of platforms and tools, and therefore should also have excellent communication skills to support our work.

The post-holder will also provide specialist administrative support—which will include scientific writing, proof-reading, and design work (principally using InDesign and Illustrator)—and will provide occasional cross-cover for the Library Technology Officer in their support of the MSc in Oncology.

The post-holder will work closely with the Head of Education Projects on continuous improvement projects, and should be able to provide a fresh set of eyes and come up with novel insights into the complex, established processes underlying our educational activities.

This role might particularly suit a graduate in the natural or biomedical sciences, with a general interest in technology and education.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate must have:

• an undergraduate degree (in the natural or biomedical sciences, or with strong science A Levels if in another discipline);
• excellent communication and time management skills; and
• experience of managing complex deadline-driven projects.

The Education Projects and Quality team works on underpinning activity in the ICR’s Learning & Teaching Strategy. This includes the recruitment of outstanding research degree students, the delivery of the ICR Conference, and transformational technology projects. The team also leads on quality assurance of education activity, and the governance of academic committees and processes.

The role of the broader Academic Services directorate is to create an efficient and effective environment for the ICR’s scientific community to flourish. Our services underpin both research and education at the ICR.
