Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role
The University operates a 50-metre outdoor swimming pool and diving pool during the summer months – for staff and their families and the public. You will supervise and support the pool lifeguards to ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming environment is provided to all staff and customers using the University of Waikato pool facilities.
Managing a small team of Lifeguards you will also be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the pool and plant facilities. You will help ensure the efficient and effective delivery of our facilities and services to ensure the supervision of customers, the facility, water quality and customer service are all kept to a high standard.
This role has a strong health and safety focus with the ability to take a proactive approach to identify, communicate and eliminate hazards. In addition, this role is also covered by the Children’s Act 2014, which means that shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo all safety checking requirements under the Act.
The role is full-time and will involve some rostered shifts Monday – Sunday over the pool’s summer opening. This fixed term role starts on 30 October 2023 and concludes on 6 April 2024. Salary will be in the range of $67,000 to $75,000 per year, pro rata depending on skills, knowledge and experience brought to the position.

Ko wai koe? – Who are you?
You will be an experienced lifeguard with a valid Pool Lifeguard Practicing Certificate and Workplace First Aid Certificate. Preferably, you will also have qualifications in water quality management and chemical handling or be prepared to do the training. You will be used to the responsibilities of daily poolside operations including provision of excellent customer service, and a great user experience in a swimming pool environment. You’ll have a commitment to customer service and safety and enjoy working outdoors.
