Roads Maintenance Worker (3 positions)
Reporting to the Supervisor of Operations, the Roads Maintenance Worker is responsible to carry out a full range of duties including operating specialized equipment, including supporting winter control operations as well as completing a variety of repairs to various Town of Ajax infrastructure. The successful candidate will contribute to a safe state of repair of Town roads and infrastructure.
Key Duties:
Assists with the maintenance operations on Town of Ajax roadways in an effective, efficient, safe and environmentally friendly manner;
Performs maintenance duties to various Town infrastructure such as, but not limited to; road maintenance, sign maintenance, storm sewer maintenance, asphalt patching, roadside protection repair, sidewalk repair, pavement marking maintenance, picking and removal of litter and Illegal dumping from roadsides, infrastructure inspection and fence repair ;
Operates winter control equipment including; dump trucks equipped to apply salt equipped with a plow and a wing attached, sidewalk clearing machines and various other winter control maintenance equipment;
Ensures the safe and efficient operation of departmental equipment including operating such equipment as; various stake trucks with and without attachments, 5 Tonne single axle dump truck with attachments, street and pathway sweepers, articulating front end loader and grader, backhoe and various tractors.
Qualifications/Skills:
High school diploma or equivalent;
Current DZ driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract;
Minimum 2 years of experience in the maintenance and repair of municipal infrastructure including road maintenance;
Minimum 2 years of experience in winter control experience including plowing and salting roads, sidewalks, parking lots and trails;
Demonstrated ability to competently and safely operate equipment relating to the maintenance of municipal infrastructure;
Demonstrated skills relating to various construction techniques, such as, but not limited to; concrete repair, asphalt repair, storm sewer repairs, drainage excavations and fence repairs
Demonstrated understanding of various applicable Legislations, Acts (i.e. Occupational Health & Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act and Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7) and Town Policies
Demonstrated effective oral and written communication and able to keep a detailed logbook;
Demonstrated strong interpersonal and customer service skills;
Demonstrated good analytical skills;
Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position under adverse weather and site conditions;
Must be able to work overtime as required;
Upon being hired, able to provide a current criminal reference check that is satisfactory to the Town.
This is a unionized position that works a 40 hour work week. As this position assist with winter control activities, the incumbent is required to be available for winter control standby from mid-November to mid-April each year.
Members of the CUPE bargaining unit will be considered first in accordance with the Collective Agreement. If there are no qualified candidates from within the bargaining unit, consideration may be given to other applicants.
