our Power Systems Team!
Transpower’s Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko outlines New Zealand’s opportunity to accelerate electrification to help meet climate change and sustainability goals. Significant increases in both grid and local network connected energy resources are expected.
About the team
Our Operations division provides New Zealand’s System Operator service and is involved in working with electricity market participants, transmission and distribution network owners, and asset owners for any energy resource with a capacity greater than 1MW.
Our newly formed Power System Development team, based in Wellington, specialises in strategic technical research and advice for emerging energy technologies. They will partner with the Electricity Authority to prepare New Zealand’s System Operator and industry participants to meet the challenges a 100% renewable power system will bring to future system security and resilience.
Their work will enable the Electricity Industry Participation Code (the Code), standards and guidelines to evolve to allow emerging technologies to seamlessly integrate into the power system.
A career defining opportunity for you
For experienced Power Systems Professionals who love a technical challenge, and have a passion for renewable energy and strategic thinking, joining both the Transmission Asset Owner and System Operator gives you the opportunity to work at the very heart of enabling a net carbon zero future.
Working closely with other power system professionals across Transpower you’ll explore and communicate the challenges and opportunities that the transition to a 100% renewable electricity system will bring. Using your outstanding analytical and communication skills, you’ll help us engage with the Electricity Authority and industry participants to make the required changes to the market, standards and the Code to enable a secure and resilient power system for New Zealand for generations to come.
What will you bring?

You will have honed your ability to understand, analyse and solve complex power system problems through working for a Transmission System Operator, Grid Owner, Engineering Consultancy, Research Institution, Government or professional institution.
Your communication skills, attention to detail and ability to problem solve and influence will be put to the test as you consider the implications of an evolving New Zealand power system to power system operations, system security and stability. You’ll consider the challenges for the System Operator due to high penetration levels of renewable or inverter generation technologies including energy storage systems like batteries, pumped hydro and hydrogen.
To be considered, your previous experience, application and cover letter will demonstrate:
A Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in Power System or Electrical Engineering
Knowledge and at least 3+ years’ experience in modelling and analysing inverter generation technologies. Where applicable please highlight any research/reports/conference papers you have been involved with
Knowledge and at least 5+ years’ experience with Power System Analysis Tools to support building dynamic power system models, performing load flow and time domain simulations; ideally Siemens PSS®E or DIgSILENT PowerFactory
You take an enterprise-wide view and have the curiosity to question and look beyond the obvious to seek alternatives
An innate ability to work with/lead a team, through influence, to deliver technical projects
