Description:Under the general supervision of an attending maternal fetal medicine physician, the genetic counselor
will provide consultative services to pregnant and preconceptional patients for a wide variety of genetic
indications. The purpose of the genetic counseling session is to provide patient education, offer and
coordinate genetic and prenatal testing as indicated, provide patient support, and share pertinent
gathered information with the attending physician and ultrasound staff to ensure quality patient care
Performs administrative functions to ensure proper operations of the Fetal Assessment Center and outreach clinics. A). Reviewing patient records prior to scheduled appointment time to ensure information/research/medical records necessary to appropriately counsel patient are available at the time of the genetic counseling session. B). Assist in triaging of patients for appointments in the FAC and outreach locations.
Demonstrates knowledge and ability in the electronic medical record (Epic) for documentation of genetic counseling session and for ordering tests. A). Complete progress note for each patient seen for consultation, concisely outlining the genetic risk assessment, information discussed with each patient, testing offered, and whether the patient elected or declined offered testing. B). Order desired testing in Epic, and assist laboratory personnel in preparing samples to send to outside laboratories for highly specialized testing.C). Complete a cover letter to referring physicians to ensure appropriate communication between the genetic counselors and referring physicians.
Provides support and participates in departmental educational programs.A). Participates in department in-services, educational programs, and section staff meetings.B). Participates in orientation and training of peers.C). Conduct formal and informal education programs for physicians, genetic counseling and medical students, other health professionals and the general community.D). Participates in the training and clinical supervision of genetic counseling graduate students, residents and medical students.
Performs and demonstrates competence in genetic counseling protocols by assessing genetic risks in pregnancy and providing this information in a clear and understandable manner to the patient and the attending physician. A). Recognizing, identifying and appropriately communicating genetic risks through review of family history, medical and pregnancy history and available test results. B). Provide comprehensive information regarding the etiology,inheritance, incidence/carrier risks, and natural history/prognosis for genetic conditions in culturally appropriate terms that the patient will comprehend. C). Interpret genetic laboratory results for patients and referring physicians. D). Facilitate patient decision making process. E). Provide informed consent for prenatal procedures which includes a full discussion of the potential risks, benefits, complications, limitations and implications of prenatal diagnosis, as well as a discussion of alternative options. F). Provide short-term, patient centered support. G). Document the content of the genetic counseling session into the patient’s electronic medical record to ensure continuity of patient’s care. H). Employing professional judgment and discretion in order to protect the patient’s rights and privacy.I)Demonstrating empathy for patients and their families members by maintaining a nurturing environment through which patient care is provided.
Monitor and integrates new technologies, theories and resources into patient care, project design, education programs and program development. Demonstrates extensive knowledge of human genetics and medical genetics.
Obtains Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as required for American Board of Genetic Counseling certification and State of Illinois Genetic Counselor Licensure.
