This competition is restricted to the continuing, full time UofA students.

University of Alberta International (UAI) envisions a campus where all students are engaged in learning about the world and understand their potential and responsibilities in a global context. This is achieved through programs and services that:

  • welcome international students, support them in the achievement of their goals and assist in the establishment of their community;
  • create opportunities for international and Canadian students to interact;

UAI is looking to hire 2 students to assist with our Student Programs & Services unit.

The Program Assistants will provide support in student engagement through the effective planning, logistics, communications, volunteer management and delivery of programming for international undergraduate and graduate students. They will also assist with data entry and general office duties.

They will work within the :

  • Visiting Programs (VP) providing support to the International Visiting Student Program (IVSP), short-term summer cohort programs and research internships for international visiting students.
  • International Student Services (ISS) providing support for international student programming and settlement services.

The successful candidates will display well-developed interpersonal and intercultural skills, show initiative, and possess the ability to work with multiple stakeholders. Furthermore, the successful candidates will have exceptional knowledge of the University of Alberta campus and the greater Edmonton community.


Duties

  • Plan and deliver social events for international and domestic students within defined budgets and in adherence to risk management policies.
  • Assist students with pre-arrival and post-arrival in person, via email and/or instant messaging. Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
  • Organize, update, and maintain resources, schedules, and contact records. Maintain online presence in social media.
  • Assist with day-to-day operations and perform other duties as required.
  • Assist in volunteer recruitment, training and management.
  • Lead volunteers in organizing and evaluating social events.
  • Analyze and compile statistics for reporting purposes.
  • Coordinate up to 6 overnight trips for groups of students.
  • May accompany groups of students on overnight trips.
  • Organize electronic documents and maintain digital filing systems.
  • Manage email inbox, communicate with program participants and triage inquiries. Generate contract and award letters for program participants.
  • Assist with day-to-day program operations and perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

The ideal candidates must be continuing, full-time, UofA students (taking a minimum of 9 credits in the fall term for undergraduate students) and have a flexible schedule. In addition to these requirements, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and demonstrated intercultural competence.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills with superb attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and be self-directed.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, take initiative, and work under pressure
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a culturally diverse team.
  • An understanding of issues international students face when coming to Canada.
  • An ability to clearly articulate the student experience (e.g. workloads, time management, etc.)
  • Strong computer skills, including the use of Google applications, Microsoft Office Suite, and social media channels. Strong quantitative analytical skills – background in statistics, mathematics or economics preferred.
  • Experience with program or event planning would be an asset.
  • Experience volunteering with the University of Alberta International would be an asset (e.g. Peer Program, Transitions Welcome Ambassador)
  • First Aid Certification would be an asset.

Additional Information


This position will work
35 hrs/week between May and August 2022 with a possibility of extension. These positions require work during regular business hours, evenings and weekends, and may require up to 6 overnight trips with groups of students.
